If you have lived in Waco for any amount of time, you know that Waco is a place with character but sometimes it can be difficult to think of things to do. To those who plan on visiting whether it be to tour Baylor or to visit Magnolia, here is a list of some things you can visit while you’re here. Incorporated are some food places because you’re going to have to eat sometime and that, to me, is the most important part. For all my fellow Baylor Bears who are reading this, maybe you’ll find some inspiration to go out and adventure around Waco, or try a new place to eat and ditch the same ole’ Whataburger and Chik-fil-a gig. Why? Well because Waco is an interesting place with some pretty darn good things to eat and see.
1. Austin Avenue Downtown
There isn’t much of a bustling night life but Austin Avenue is surely the place to be. With restaurants and bars lining both sides of the streets, with little boutiques hidden on every corner, you’re sure to find a bite to eat and something to do afterwards. Maybe check out the Hippodrome (yes, they actually show movies) or grab a bite at one of the local restaurants there. Either way, there’s plenty to do there.
2. Cameron Park
If you are more of an outdoorsy person here is something that may be right up your alley. This is more for those who are visiting or maybe those who have never heard of this park but it’s pretty well known to most of us at Baylor or live in Waco. The scenic drive to the lookout spots are absolutely beautiful and peaceful and the Brazos river lies just below the cliffs that you may find yourself on. Whether it be hammocking, taking a stroll, or going on a run, Cameron park is a wonderful place for friends to get together, throw a picnic, and share some good laughs.
3. Lake Waco
To go along with the nature theme here, we move on to Lake Waco. There are various spots to park your car by the waters and settle down for a calm relaxing day by the lake or to hangout with some friends. Waco water isn’t the best so maybe swimming isn’t the greatest idea but hey, its still nice to get some fresh air.
4. Waco Wetlands
The Wetlands are a beautiful place to take a walk. Nestled deep within Waco, this is the heart of nature in this area. With wildlife teeming about (nothing big or scary, just frogs, fish, etc.) this is the perfect place to observe the natural ecosystem. There are bridges that allow you to walk over the waters and docks where you can just sit and embrace nature. It is the perfect place to let all worries go and just relax.
5. The Marina
If you love water then you’ll love the Marina. Because of its close proximity to Baylor, it is a popular place for college kids to go and kick back. With the options of paddle boarding, kayaking, sand volleyball, or even testing your skills at tight rope walking you surely won’t get bored here. People are able to kayak through the Brazos, floating right by the gorgeous McLane Stadium and into the small private pools branching off the river. It is a complete stress reliever and something fun for families and friends to do.
6. Baris
You may be a bit hungry after exploring all those places so here I suggest a classic Italian restaurant, popular to locals and bears all around. It is a hot spot for some Italian food and I must admit that their pink sauce is exquisite. So give it a try, you may find yourself going back for more.
7. Fuego
Continuing on with food, the best part of this article, I present to you: Fuego. With locations in College Station and Waco, Fuego serves tacos unlike any other. It’s almost like Torchy’s but more unique and simplistic with the same splash of flavor. One taco will surely fill you up but sometimes you’ll force a second one because it is that delicious... just be careful of the super spicy yellow sauce. I got hot sauce in my bag swag.
8. Taco Z (Taqueria Zacatecas)
If you couldn’t tell I love tacos. So I present to you the biggest bang for your buck. Taco Z is a taco store that is family owned. With no chains anywhere else, this is surely a unique place serving street tacos. No more than $1.25 per taco, this is a complete steal. Perfect for college kids on a budget.
9. Farmers Market
Every Saturday morning from 9am-1pm the farmers market located near downtown is bustling with people. You can buy fresh vegetables, try a crepe, or even by one of their luxurious grilled cheeses. Of course that isn’t all, there are so many things to look at and so many drinks and different foods to try. The farmers market is a joyful place to be on beautiful Saturday morning.
10. Lula Jane's
A small café located in close proximity to Downtown where all ingredients are fresh and lunches are limited, Lula Jane’s is a classic, small town place where foodies can enjoy a traditional home cooked meal and some delicious pie.
11. Food Trucks
Last but not least, the food trucks. There are various ones that line University Park in Downtown right off the Brazos River. Food and a view? Sounds good to me! Take your pick from BBQ, to Mediterranean, to Indian or maybe try some dessert. Either way, you can’t go wrong.
