11 Pieces Of Advice From Kids 11 And Under

It happens to all of us. We get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life of school, work and responsibilities. We forget what it's like to stop, smell the roses and live life a little more simply. Luckily, I'm reminded often of those carefree and simple days by being a babysitter and a camp counselor (and because I act like a 5-year-old regularly, but that's beside the point) to kids under the age of 11. They inspire me not to get caught up in the complexities of life, but rather to live each day in the moment and like you don't have another worry in the world other than what game you'll play next outside in the warm summer sun. I decided to compile a list of sweet words (and candid quotes) of advice from two sisters that I babysit for. Not only do their words show how beyond their years they are, but also how everyone should truly live their lives.

1. Believe in yourself.

"You can do many more things when you believe in yourself." Truer words were never said.

2. Be kind (and nice).

"If you're bad, it's not good because you're gonna hurt somebody. If you're being kind, you're not gonna hurt somebody." Simple as that. What's better than being kind and nice? Not much.

3. Care for others.

At a young age, these two sisters value others' feelings immensely. Making sure that others are put first and cared for shows their true character. They also repeated the age old adage "if you care for others, they'll care for you!"

4. Make friends so you don't feel lonely.

Because who doesn't need best friends to pick them up when they're down?

5. Stand up for yourself.

"If it's not right, don't do what other people tell you to do." These two know their worth, and it's amazing.

6. Be yourself.

Sing, dance, play princesses. Oh, you're 21? Who cares!

7. Don't make a lot of drama.

"It will only draw bad attention to you." In other words, save the drama for your mama!

8. Don't care what other people think of you.

"...Because if you do, it might change the way you act."

9. Don't listen to what other people say if it's mean.

"If you listen to it, it might hurt your feelings."

10. Make sure you always include everyone.

Sisters, poster children for inclusion and the kindest duo. Coming to a playground near you to help a lonely friend in need (refer to list item number four).

11. Live your life one step at a time.

"Don't get too far ahead of yourself." This is a piece of advice for the fast-paced world we live in. Why worry about anything else than the moment you're in? According to these girls, it's the best way to be.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
