As the academic year for most public schools and colleges and universities begins, it's also a big stepping stone for those entering college. A huge transition is taking part in their lives and I feel it is critical to start them off with a few words of wisdom from a fellow college peer.
1. No need to be the top kid.
It's only your first year, you have three more years to make yourself the greatest.
2. Make yourself stand out.
Be your own Patrick; it's no fun being the same.
3. Get the most bang for your buck.
Use the gym at the university, print from the free printing locations on campus, etc. Get your university gear from giveaway events on campus. Don't spend money when you're already paying tuition.
4. It's OK to switch majors.
There's nothing definite you need to know about what you want to do. You have time.
5. Realize that friends can be family.
You're going to meet people that make you better as a person, that challenge you, that grow with you, and want the best for you. Treasure them.
6. In order to have friends that become family, first break out of your shell and make friends.
7. Love won't happen the minute you step on campus.
Don't rush into a relationship from the get-go. Just enjoy yourself and focus on you.
8. Take fun electives.
Build your resume with the classes you need from your program. But if there's an archery class, take a chance. Have some fun learning too!
9. Four years fly by -- enjoy every part of it.
The sad, the funny, the happy, the dread, the studying, the sleepless, the sleep-full. Everything.
10. Club meetings are critical.
All clubs will hold general bodies and general meetings to discuss upcoming events and updates. Always attend. Most, if not all, will -- nine times out of 10 -- serve free food and have free giveaways or tokens!
11. No one is perfect their first year.
Don't plan to be the perfect child, studying every night, attending classes, and sticking to a regime. It's ok to slack a little, it's OK to have fun some nights. It's your college years, not someone else's.
All in all, your college years are what build and mold your character. Be yourself; let others acknowledge you. You are your own most powerful asset, and no one can be you. So, incoming freshmen, here's what I leave to you: be young, be wild, be free. Welcome to college!
