11 New Year's Resolutions That Never Last

We try every year, and every year we're unsuccessful.

11 New Year's Resolutions That Never Last

With every passing year, I always make a list of resolutions that I always intend to follow through on. However, I usually can't seem to keep up with most of my resolutions for more than a couple of weeks. Here are some resolutions that I have made almost every year, as well as broken every year.

1. "I'm going to get in shape."

Every year, I say that I'm going to go to the gym, start running, lift weights, etc., but by the end of the year, the closest I get to actually working out is speed walking through the mall while christmas shopping.

2. "I'm going to eat healthier."

Similar to working out, eating healthy never actually happens. I can already bet that I'll be giving this resolution up 3 days into 2016.

3. "I'm going to study more."

This is a resolution that I never go through with, even though I should. As much as I need the studying, I would much rather study the 7th season of Grey's Anatomy on Netflix.

4. "I'm going to save my money."

I always say that I'm going to save whatever money I get over the holidays, but then I tend to blow it all on food. Oops.

5. "I'm going to watch less Netflix."

Haha, good one. Maybe next year.

6. "I'm going to learn to be a neater person."

I always try, but living in a shoebox of a dorm makes it a little hard to stay neat.

7. "I'm going to spend more time with my family."

This is a resolution I usually don't mean to break. Being 300 miles away from home makes it a lot harder to spend time with family whenever I'm homesick, no matter how much time I actually want to spend with them.

8. "I'm going to travel more."

This is something my friends and I always say, until we realize that we are all broke and none of us actually have the time for it.

9. "I'm going to stop oversleeping."

.. And then you realize how bad of an idea it was to take an 8:30 lab. How long will this last? Probably a week into the new semester.

10. "I'm going to get a job."

Even though I desperately need the money, I probably won't actually go through with applying for a job until I'm living off of ramen.

11. "I'm going to get more involved on campus."

No matter how much I want to get more involved on campus, I always get sucked back into my old routines, and never actually get my foot through the door when it comes to joining new clubs.

Every year, we make these resolutions in hopes that it will make us more productive, make us a better person, make us a better version of ourselves, etc. However, even though most of those resolutions don't last for more than a month, they're still something necessary to make every year, and it's fun seeing how long you can keep up with them.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
