If you're like me, you're that one in your friend group who can't get through an older movie without commenting on at least 37 of the main characters' clothing items or accessories that you wish you had in your own wardrobe. Quite honestly, I know that many other women feel my pain when I whine incessantly about my dream to deck out my closet with an array of outfits from different eras. So, to all those who love our mothers', grandmothers', and great-grandmothers' trends a bit more than our current options, here's a list of movies in which we all longed for the leading lady's wardrobe.
1. Titanic (1997)
How was it that Rose could even look flawless as she contemplated throwing herself off a ship? Oh, that's right--I suppose anyone could look gorgeous in the intricately beaded maroon cocktail gown paired with those dainty white gloves.
2. Heathers (1988)
Only Veronica Sawyer could pull off that late-80's, off-the-shoulder sweater and jumper combo while systematically murdering her jerk classmates. Oh, and if her fashion weren't enough to envy, her sexy, sociopath boyfriend will probably do it for you.
3. Water For Elephants (2011)
I still don't know how Marlena's hair stayed in perfect finger-waves as she and Jacob jumped off a moving train, but either way, she rocks those early 30's locks. And dear Lord, do I wish I had someone with August's sort of money to buy me outfits HALF as adorable as hers.
4. Across the Universe (2007)
Everything about this movie is just perfect, but the fashion was even better. Why can't I dance around in flow-y skirts and bell-bottoms without the strange looks that might follow? Maybe if I drank the punch, I... you know what, nevermind. A paisley button down would look just fine.
5. Grease (1978)
While I'll always appreciate a good poodle skirt, the one I'm really envying here is Betty Rizzo. That plunging v-neck blouse and high waisted skirt paired with some killer heels could strike any man speechless with one look.
6. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
Marilyn=perfect. Need I say more?
Nope? Good.
7. Gone With the Wind (1939)
While I don't think I'd love to wear hoop skirts every day of my life, I'd love to have worn one to a ball in my mansion, had I lived in the 1860s on a plantation. But you know... it's 2016, sadly.
8. The Great Gatsby (2013)
All I want in life is to pull off the 1920's bob that Daisy and Jordan so effortlessly could. No wonder Nick and Gatsby wanted them.
9. Marie Antoinette (2006)
I probably would have been best friends with the real Marie Antoinette, but mostly to steal her clothes and sit around eating sweets while drinking champagne all day in the palace with her.
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
While Keira Knightly looks badass in pirate garb, I can't help but drool over the corset and lacy gowns that she utterly detests.
And finally, I saved the best and most cliche for last, that being...
11. The Notebook (2004)
I'm rather biased with this one when you take my girl-crush on Rachel McAdams and my unhealthy obsession with 1940s fashion into consideration. But come on, do you blame me? She's still jaw-droppingly beautiful in a dress that's been through a thunderstorm; not to mention her day-old makeup and hair after she comes back to Noah.
