If you haven't heard of these amazing females this past year, you had to have been living under a rock. With 2016 on the horizon, it's time to take a look back on their standout moments in 2015 and consider their even brighter future in the New Year!
1. Serena Williams.
Tennis star Serena Williams took the world by storm yet again this year as she completed her second “Serena Slam" -- four consecutive Grand Slam titles culminating in her domination at Wimbledon. Name the "Sports Illustrated"Sportsperson of the Year, she has overcome so much criticism, media-bullying, and body-shamers in 2015 and has shown that no one in women’s tennis, perhaps in sports across the globe, works as hard as Serena Williams. Congratulations to her, and a big thank you for being a strong role model and example to young girls all over the world.
2. Taylor Swift.
Obviously Queen Taylor has to make this list. In 2015, Taylor Swift brought her 1989 World Tour to the world and stamped her legacy in music and crowd-pleasing as she brought in guests like Fifth Harmony, Mick Jagger, Jason Derulo, and Selena Gomez onstage with her, among others. She stepped out comfortably for the first time with her DJ boyfriend, Calvin Harris, showing everyone that she doesn’t care what the critics say or what other people think. Basically, 2015 was just another year in the books for Taylor Swift as she showed that her super posse of celebrities has some serious girl power and that she really does rule the music world.
3. Hillary Clinton.
Depending on your political party, you may not appreciate this one, but I’m a firm supporter of my girl Hill and she made my list. Hillary Clinton, leader of your political party or not, has shown her strength and prowess in a typically male-dominated environment. She has shown that she’s not living in the shadow of her husband, Bill Clinton, but instead is outshining him with every word she speaks on the debate stage. Hillary could very well be the new face of our nation, and whether you like her or not, she has been one of the major players in 2015 and she’s giving bigots like Donald Trump a run for their money.
4. Fifth Harmony.
This girl group may seem like just a group of singers to you, but they have given so much more than just their voices in 2015. Lauren Jauregui, Camila Cabello, Dinah Jane, Ally Brooke, and Normani Kordei make up this group that won XFactor and dominated the 2015 hits with their single “Worth It.” These five girls are great role models as well, speaking on some very important issues such as equality, fair wages, mental health, terrorism and foreign policy, and obviously music as well. Musical success was fantastic for this group in 2015, but their amazing hold on the media has catapulted them to the top of headlines each week.
5. Selena Gomez.
Much like Fifth Harmony, Selena Gomez had great musical success in 2015 as her new album “Revival” came out and she performed on the Victoria Secret Fashion Show. Besides these musical endeavors, however, Selena was in the spotlight for other, more important reasons. In 2015, we discovered Selena’s struggle with Lupus disease and how she coped with her treatments and body-shaming as she underwent some scary times. We also were let in to her personal life and her split with singer Justin Bieber, as the two stars made their breakup unfortunately public. All in all, Selena Gomez came out on top of 2015 and showed that she’s not just an entertainer, but a role model as well.
6. Shannon and Cammie.
This Youtube couple has accumulated a giant following across the country and the world as well after a few years of posting fun videos on their Youtube channel each week. Shannon Beveridge and Camden Scott are a couple that have used Youtube to spread a message of acceptance, equality, and love to their viewers through a look into their relationship and what they’ve learned after dating for three years. While many of their videos are hilarious and light, some are quite deep and involve the struggles the two have encountered in being a same-sex couple even in 2015. These two great women have shown how much they have to give the world and have only good things coming their way.
7. Ronda Rousey.
Yes, Ronda Rousey lost her biggest fight yet to Holly Holm in the UFC bantamweight championship earlier this year and hasn’t been 100 percent right since. But Rousey has taken the world by storm in all of her other fights, knocking out each opponent in under 30 seconds and simply dominating the competition. She came up with the phrase, “Don’t be a ‘do nothing b*tch’” as well, telling girls to do something with their strengths and talents and realizing that it’s a great thing to have muscle and be fit. While her loss came as a big surprise, she has still had an amazing 2015 and has given women’s fighting such a boost in the media.
8. Ruby Rose.
The "Orange Is the New Black" star blew people away this year as she became so well-known after her role on the Netflix original series starring as Stella Carlin. She became a spokesperson for equality, joined many like Caitlyn Jenner to promote gender equality and a closer look into mental health, and also showed her talents as a world-class DJ and entertainer. 2015 was great for 2015, but I think 2016 will be even better,
9. Malala Yousafzai.
If you don’t know who this girl is then you live under a terrible rock and you need to get on your computer now and educate yourself about her message. Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani girl who won the Nobel Peace Prize, is an advocate for female education and has spoken all over the world on her important objectives. She has teamed up with major celebrities and spokespeople on gender equality and feminism such as Emma Watson and Ellen Degeneres to spread her message about all of the opportunities that girls around the world should have. This girl embodies bravery, courage, and intelligence all in one person, and she has so much more good to do in the world in the years to come.
10. Alessia Cara.
This 19 year old singer hit the charts with her single “Here” in 2015 and has appeared on talk shows and morning television to croon her new songs to America. She has signed on to perform at “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” special as well this year, and also has a tour going on now that will carry into the new year. Alessia Cara has made friends with other big names on this list like Taylor Swift as she explains to fans that she’s always been an outsider and never part of the “cool” group. Cara is a new and exciting role model to watch as she not only sings but spreads a message of individuality and not caring about what others think.
11. Abby Wambach.
Abby Wambach’s incredible career in women’s soccer came to an end in 2015 as she played her last game ever in a U.S. uniform in December. As the women’s national team won the World Cup in 2015 and showed absolute dominance in soccer by unifying the country, Abby Wambach led her squad with respect and honor. Women’s soccer will miss this captain so much as will all fans, but Abby Wambach changed the soccer landscape forever. She, like so many others on this list, preached equality and fought for acceptance, but she also showed how cool it is for women to be strong and badass in athletics. Thank you, captain Abby Wambach, for everything you’ve done for women’s sports and the U.S women’s national team.
