11 Lessons that My First Year of College Taught Me

My first year of college is officially complete, and let me tell you, it is a great feeling! The long days of enduring classes, mountains of homework and studying, and living away from home are over with for the summer. This experience was truly a memorable one. But, I will never forget about all of the important lessons that my first year of college taught me, and I am forever grateful.

1. It is okay to distance yourself from old high school friends.

I can remember all of the anxious feelings that I had towards going away to college. I would frantically text my high school friends during the first few weeks of school, and we were always together. But, I quickly realized that I would never meet any other friends if I kept myself inside of my comfort zone. It's okay to create some distance in order to build new relationships.

2. You will miss home.

I can personally admit that when I was in high school, I could not wait until I could get out of my house and in to college. There was something exciting about being out in the real world and having unlimited freedom. As much as you say that you cannot wait to leave your house, I can guarantee that you will take it all back at some point. Nothing is better than home sweet home.

3. You will call mom, a lot.

You don't realize how much you depend on your mom until you are out on your own. Mom knows all, especially when it comes to cooking food, doing laundry, managing finances, and basically anything else that has to do with being an adult. And when mom doesn't immediately answer your desperate calls, it gets a little tense.

4. Depend on yourself, nobody else.

Depending on others is frustrating as it is. If you want something done, you truly have to do it yourself. I learned this lesson pretty fast, and I value independence so much more.

5. Nights to yourself are necessary.

Don't get me wrong, going out with friends is always an experience to remember. But sometimes, it's okay to relax and schedule some me-time. Treat yourself and relax because you deserve it.

6. Do not wait until the last minute to complete a project.

College is not exactly like high school. In high school, you could get away with throwing together a project at the last minute. I have witnessed many fellow students who have stressed themselves out trying to finish their projects. When you have to spend eight hours in your room frantically trying to whip up a project, it is time to reevaluate your life.

7. Roommates are a wild card.

We've all heard random roommate horror stories. But in reality, a random roommate may become your very best friend. Having random suitemates was the best thing that could have happened to me this year. But, roommate situations can also go south pretty fast. Your roomie who was your best friend or friend from high school may turn out to be your worst enemy. Whatever the situation may be, you will find out what is meant to be or not.

8. Food on campus isn't all that bad.

Much to your surprise, the meals on campus aren't the same as mom's wonderful home-cooked meals. But, it isn't all that bad. In a huge cafeteria, you can pick out whatever you want. It is still possible to eat healthy as well. With a wide range of choices, you will not suffer.

9. Opportunities are endless.

College can truly change your life in so many ways. You will figure out your future career choice, and you will start off with a major. Once again, the opportunities for your career are endless. Also, there are so many clubs, organizations, and sororities/ fraternities to get involved with on campus. I made an awesome choice of joining the dance team at my university. I've made so many new friends, and I got to do what I love. Get out there and follow your passion.

10. Organization is key.

Before I was a college student, I didn't worry too much about organization. Now, I am always organized and prepared. In order to live with another person, you really need to step up your house keeping skills. Also, keep all of your papers and notes in their respective folders and notebooks. Labeling and creating separate folders on your laptop is a smart decision as well.

11. The friendships that you make in college will last a lifetime.

College has given me so many new friends, and they're from so many different places. I am thankful everyday for my new friends, and I honestly could not imagine life without them. You know that when you are sad because the school year is over that you must have done something right.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.
