Since my senior year of high school I had spent my summers working at the local dollar store in the town where i'm from. I am now a junior in college and this summer was a little different for me. I got the opportunity to stay on my college campus and be a tutor/counselor for Upward Bound. Upward Bound is for high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. My job as a staff member was to basically take care of a group of girls. Take them to class, breakfast, etc. There's been plenty of drama, plenty of crying, and plenty of people trying to break the rules. In the midst of everything, I learned a lot of things here this summer. Here is my top 11.
1. All of the kids and staff both love each other so much.
Don't let the smiles fool you though, there's been plenty of drama!
2. We've definitely got a wild bunch!
3. Sisterhood is a must.
4. So many squad goals.
5. Some of these kids are seriously so crafty.
6. Apparently some of the staff are part time chefs.
7. They all clean up nicely ;)
8. Sometimes skating is hard...
Above is an actual picture of Bambi first walking. A.k.a Jacob learning to skate.
9. Upward Bound family is forever.
10. We're convinced this years staff is some of the best LWC has ever had.
11. Remember kids, if you see it, report it.
This summer has been so rewarding. I've watched kids and staff grow so much. We've laughed, cried, yelled and laughed some more. My first summer here has definitely been a great experiences. I'm thankful for all of these children, staff, and memories we've already made. Here's to #UB16 :)
