11 Just BGSU Things

Somethings only people from BG understand.

Bowling Green is a small town that thousands of college students call home. Although the town is small it has captured a solid amount of millennials hearts, sometimes Bowling Green even has the effect of keeping students here for five, maybe even six years, and if you're on your seventh year you'll probably just stay forever. There are many quirks to make you love BG, there are also a few things to make you hate BG, and for some reason, there are many that make you never want to leave BG. No matter what your major is, what your hobbies are, or who you hang out with, you will be able to relate at least one thing on this list. Each and every person has their own reason to love BG, but here's a list of why you love and hate BG.

1. J-Walking Wooster

I think I can speak for every BGSU student when I say everyone has J-walked Wooster at least once in their life.

2. Parking tickets

I would just like to say that BGSU Parking Services is a dedicated bunch of people, but probably one of the most hated groups on campus by anyone who owns a car. However, some people don't learn their lesson after the first $200 worth of parking tickets.

3. Tuesday nights at Shots

If it's a Tuesday night and there's not an exam in the morning, you're at Shots.

4. Club Jerome

Going to the seventh floor of the library is a social event, if you want peace and quiet I'd suggest the eighth floor. Either way, you're bound to get some homework done.

5. Hating Toledo

It's just a given.

6. Selling pizza on the side walk

This is probably the most genius thing I've seen in my entire life. If you walk the side walk of Wooster around 2 a.m. you will find people selling pizza, but don't worry it's not randoms it's an actual business. It's also only $5, what a deal.

7. Walking to the right

The seal is a very important piece of campus, but if there is one thing you should know about it, ALWAYS WALK TO THE RIGHT. If you notice in the picture everyone is walking to the right, this is because no one wants to have bad luck. This is actually scarier than the chain text you didn't forward in the seventh grade, so please just walk to the right.

8. The train

Ever want to be woken up in the middle of the night? Have no fear, BG has a train you can hear no matter what part of town you're on.

9. Bars at midnight

I've visited friends that go to other universities and they go to the bars as early as 10:30, but at BG that is not an option. It doesn't matter if it's a Monday night, you just simply don't go to the bars until midnight.

10. Falcon Friday!

Because on Fridays, school spirit is just a little more necessary.

11. No Matching Buildings

There is really no theme to our campus and every building looks different from one another.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
