11 Factors That Identify You As An SNHU Student

To all my fellow Penmen—this one's for you.

Obviously everyone knows Southern New Hampshire isn’t the largest university. Walking around campus or places like the dining hall always becomes a friendly outing due to the amount of familiar faces you know on your trip. That cute guy you saw last week and didn't want to talk to because you were scared shows up in one of your classes and you end up seeing him everyday. All my Penmen understand the struggle, but here’s a list of 10 more things we all know too well.

1. Petey the Penmen

I feel as if it’s safe to say we all know Petey. Petey has been there for all of us. Whether it be on Accepted Students Day, Open House, Homecoming, you name it—if you ever need a good hug or a quick pic, find my boy Petey. I’m sure he’ll be down.

2. SNHU Prez

Everybody knows Paul LeBlanc, and better yet, Paul LeBlanc knows everybody. He and Petey both, they’re everywhere! Never have I met a man more dedicated to something than he is to our education. Not everyone can say their president has the highest expectations for their students, but you can see it in how much our community has improved since he has been here. Oh, and if you’re into racquetball, schedule a time to play him. He’ll probably win.

3. The Train Tracks

If you haven’t been down to the train tracks once (or a couple hundred times), you clearly don’t go to SNHU. Whether it's down for a photo shoot that soon gets put on Instagram, or for “artsy” pictures, we’ve all been there (let’s be honest).

4. Tuckerman Hall

First, I'll start off by saying those stairs though. Everyone knows. Everyone complains. Honestly, props to the people who conquer those stairs everyday. To all the freshman who fight over getting a room in Tuckerman, those stairs are a nice wakeup call. How bad do you actually want that double with your own bathroom?

5. The Last Chapter Pub

Ah, the Last Chapter Pub. One of the main attractions parents love on their tours here at SNHU. They have the cool lighting, the stage, the bar for people of age on the weekends. The pub is cool. I mean, they give you free drinks and snacks when you walk in, and they host events. I just wish I could say I ever went in there.

6. The Matt Petersons

You all probably know him as “The Facebook Guy.” Matt is always there in our class groups on Facebook to answer our questions and update us on current information. Known to do everything at one time, Matt is an extremely helpful man, and a crucial part of why we are here. Truth be told, our questions never would have been answered without him. So thank you, Matt, for being The Facebook Guy.

7. Webster Hall

Dear business majors, I am truly sorry.

I am sorry you have to experience Webster Hall everyday for classes.

I am sorry you have to walk up that hill (or the path, for that matter—either one is pretty awful).

I just really am sorry.

8. Fraternities and Sororities

Peace, love, Greek life; am I right? If you’ve always dreamed of joining a fraternity or a sorority like in the movies, this isn’t the right place for you. Don't get me wrong, our three fraternities and three sororities are full of awesome people who build on the ideals of kindness, devotion, and pride. We just don’t have the “Greek row” or awesome mansions like they do everywhere else. Roll Penmen.

9. The Commercials

As you all sigh and say "Oh look, another SNHU commercial" every 5 minutes, just know we're all with you. Walking around cameras and groups of directors every so often gets old fast. Everyone thinks that SNHU is primarily an online school, but you'd be surprised to find out our campus has existed way longer than our online program. Shocker.

10. Bingo

Southern New Hampshire University, where all your tuition money goes towards prizes for weekly bingo games. You would think we’re a bunch of old people in a retirement home. Yes, bingo is as big here as the soccer team.

11. SNHU Football

Tailgating, partying, or hanging out with friends to watch the game, it's the best part of going to school here!

Oh…wait.

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
