I know a thing or two about Walt Disney World. But as a college student (who should be worrying more about her loans than which pair of Mickey ears to buy next) I've also learned a thing or two about saving money. Instead of spending any more than the roughly $100 it takes just to get into the park, here's 15 totally free, must-do hidden gems at The Happiest Place on Earth.
1. The Jungle Cruise after dark
The line typically isn't as long at night, and the ride operators are at their funniest once the sun goes down! It also adds a little sense of mystery when you really can't see the ride tracks ahead of you.
2. Thunder Mountain/Splash Mountain/Tomorrowland Transit Authority after dark
If you time it just right, riding both of these roller coasters after dark means you can watch some of the Magic Kingdom fireworks while on the ride.
3. The Walt Disney World Railroad
The WDW Railroad is often overlooked, but I'm not sure why. It's a great way to get from one end of the park to the other on those extra hot days when no one feels like walking, but it also comes with its own attraction storyline.
4. The Future World water show
Be sure to stop and admire the fountain as you enter Future World in EPCOT. At certain times throughout the day, you'll be surprised with a water show synchronized to lights and music.
5. The talking trash cans/water fountains
Don't be opposed to unexpected conversations with some unexpected guests!
6. Club Cool
When it starts to get too hot in EPCOT, stop in to Club Cool and try different sodas from all around the world...totally for free.
7. The Animation Academy
Head over to the Animation Courtyard in Hollywood Studios to attend the Animation Academy where you can learn to draw popular Disney characters. You can even take your masterpiece home.
8. DeVine
If you have a feeling that the trees are watching you in Animal Kingdom, they probably are. Keep an eye out for DeVine--- a woman on stilts who blends into the bushes and greenery. It's like a show that you don't have to wait in line to see.
9. Celebration buttons
If you're celebrating (literally) anything on your vacation, be sure to ask a Cast Member where you can pick up one of these buttons! You'll get a little extra magic on your trip.
10. Streets of America
Listen and look around carefully when walking the Streets of America in Hollywood Studios, and you'll be in for a surprise. You can hear conversations happening in the buildings around you, and if you're really lucky, you'll run across Cast Members on "set" as actors for these San Francisco and New York themed streets.
11. Hidden Mickeys
And finally, spending your vacation looking for hidden Mickeys costs exactly zero dollars, but it is a ton of fun. Technically, there are books you can buy that will give you clues as to where you can find them, but half the fun is being surprised by these subtle silhouettes in unexpected places. Happy hunting!
