Halloween New England

New England is known as an epicenter for all things Halloween and creepy, being rich in history in the United States. Even though Halloween is over, we can still take the time to explore the supposedly haunted areas in our region. Here’s a list of 11 haunted areas in the New England area:

1. The Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts.

If you grew up in Eastern Mass, you probably know the somewhat gruesome jump rope rhyme: Lizzie Borden took an ax, gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41. The house was the sight of the 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, Lizzie’s father and stepmother. Lizzie was tried and acquitted for the murders, but it is said that their spirits haunt the guest rooms of the house, which is now a bed and breakfast.

2. The Sterling Opera House in Derby, Connecticut.

Throughout the years, visitors have claimed to have experienced ghosts in the old Opera House, which closed its doors in 1945. In March 2011, it was featured on an episode of SyFi’s "Ghost Hunters," where a team of professionals investigated the alleged hauntings.

3. College Hall in Montpelier, Vermont.

It’s been said that many people have seen the ghost of a little girl haunting the chapel at College Hall at Vermont College. People have also claimed to have heard her playing the organ when no one else was seen in the room.

4. The Paine House in Coventry, Rhode Island.

Now a working museum, the Paine House has been the subject of ghost sightings for a while. In the past five years alone, many paranormal investigative teams have stayed at the house and claim they have evidence that it is in fact haunted.

5. Danvers State Hospital, Danvers, Massachusetts.

Most people agree that most abandoned state hospitals are insanely creepy. The one in my hometown was used in the movie "Shutter Island." But the Danvers State Hospital is said to be one of the most haunted in the state of Massachusetts.

6. Emily’s Bridge in Stowe, Vermont.

While the stories around the bridge vary slightly, locals started experiencing strange things at the site a young girl named Emily died at, Gold Brook Bridge. People claim to have heard screaming and other strange noises, while others claimed that their cars have been scratched going through, despite having plenty of room on each side.

7. Houghton Mansion in North Adams, Massachusetts.

In the early 1900s, the home belonged to one of the first mayors of the area, Albert Houghton. On a joy ride in 1914, a car crash killed the youngest daughter and a family friend. Distraught by his daughter’s death, Houghton died a few days later, allegedly of a broken heart. The chauffeur ultimately committed suicide not long later. Their spirits are said to haunt the house.

8. “Blood Cemetery” in Hollis, New Hampshire.

While its official name is Pine Hill Cemetery, it is most commonly known as Blood Cemetery and is known as one of the most haunted cemeteries in the area. Numerous claims of paranormal sightings have prompted investigations, where they have claimed to have proof that it is haunted.

9. Snedeker Demon House, Southington, Connecticut.

While the name might not ring a bell to most, this house was the basis for the movie “The Haunting in Connecticut."The Snedeker family moved into the house after it was converted from a funeral home. The whole family has their own stories about the horrors they allegedly experienced in the house from what they claimed to be paranormal.

10. The Captain Grant’s 1754, Preston, Connecticut.

A working bed and breakfast, the house belonged to Captain Grant, a sea captain who was lost at sea. It is said that his wife, Mercy Adelaide Avery, haunts the house, still waiting for her husband to return.

11. The Bridgewater Triangle, Southeast, Massachusetts.

That’s right, Stonehill. We go to school in an area filled with reports of the paranormal. From UFO sightings to ghostly girls on campus, the 200 square mile area around the college has many different paranormal claims.

Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, ghost adventures are always fun this time of year. If you have the heart, you may end up coming out of it a believer! Or not, but you’ll still have a fun time.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
