Grey's Anatomy has a lot of background information that you most likely had no idea about. Are you a real Grey's fan? If you are then you most likely already knew this key facts listed below.

1. Dr. Bailey was supposed to be a petite blonde.

Dr. Miranda Bailey was written as “a petite blonde” but when Chandra Wilson auditioned for the part, Shonda Rhimes was convinced that she was perfect for the part.

2. Sandra Oh auditioned for Dr. Bailey.

Sandra Oh originally auditioned for the part of Dr. Miranda Bailey but then asked to read for Cristina Yang and eventually got the part.

3. Ellen Pompeo never auditioned.

Ellen wanted to do another ABC show “Secret Service” but when that didn’t get picked up, she was asked to play Dr. Meredith Grey.

4. Isaiah Washington wanted to be “McDreamy”.

Isaiah Washington auditioned for the part as Dr. Derek Shepherd but as we all know, he didn’t get it because Patrick Dempsey was given the role. A few days after Washington’s audition, Shonda called him saying that the actor casted for Dr. Preston Burke dropped the role and they wanted him for it.

5. Alex Karev wasn’t filmed in the first episode.

Justin Chambers character Alex Karev was added into the script after the pilot was filmed, so every scene he’s in, he was digitally added into it.

6. Lexie was under the plane for 2 days.

While filming the season 8 finale (The Plane Crash episode) Chyler Leigh had to stay under that plane for the better part of the two days it took to film.

7. The network didn’t want the musical episode.

Shonda really wanted to do a musical episode, but the network didn’t want it so Shonda gathered Sara Ramirez (Callie Torres), Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt), and Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and put on a concert for the network. They eventually agreed to the musical episode.

8. McDreamy’s afraid of Shonda.

When Patrick Dempsey auditioned, he was afraid of Shonda because of her “stone cold expression.

9. Addison was only supposed to be there for three episodes.

Kate Walsh (Addison Montgomery) was only written in the script for three episodes, but everyone loved her so they made her part of the main cast. She then eventually left and got her own show, the spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice.

10. Mark Sloan had to die.

Shonda said that she had to make Eric Dane’s character Mark Sloan die in the plane crash because he could not live without Lexie grey.

11. It took multiple takes to film Denny’s death scene.

It took many takes to film Denny’s Death because Katherine Heigel (Izzie Stevens) kept crying.
