Sometimes we are in a pinch for money, but we really want to give a gift to someone we love. I have become a master at homemade and cheap gifts that won’t cost a lot. People don’t realize that sometimes just doing something small and thoughtful is way better than buying an expensive gift. Not only are these cheap gifts, but they are quality and show people you care about them.

1. A Collage.

This is my favorite, and typically my go-to gift. Take a simple 8x10 piece of paper and put on things that remind you of them. It can be memories you shared with that person, a few of their favorite things, etc. You can use magazines and cut things out of them, use photos, or simply draw or write things and then put them on the paper.

2. A Song

Write them a song and perform it! Just basically write whatever you would in a card and make it into a song or rap. I tried this for the first time and my friend was so touched by my rap, she cried and laughed a lot.

3. An Award

Make them an Award. You can find templates online or just free hand one of your own. Who doesn’t like to get awards for being awesome!!

4. A Book

A mini book. Take a few sheets of paper and just write and/or draw things. Put things like reasons why you love that person, or quotes/ inside jokes that you share with that person.

5. Sticky Notes

Similar to number four, try writing on a sticky note reasons why you love them and hide them throughout the room. Make them find those reasons or don’t tell them at first and put the reasons where they would most likely find them to add a surprise element. I suggest when thinking of how many reasons to put around the room, go with the number of how old they are going to be that day (if it’s a birthday present).

6. A Dance

Make a dance routine for them! I love dance, so I know if someone did this for me I would absolutely love this. Pick a song that is either one that you and that person like or there's a certain memory associated with it or just a sappy song with lyrics you feel help to show them you love them. Then make up choreography, record it, and send it to them.

7. Coupons

Make them “coupons.” Have you seen the coupons that are like, “You deserve a break take the day off and do something you love?” Well, make coupons geared toward that person. For example, you could put on one the coupons, “One Ice Cream Date with (insert your name here).”

8. Coloring Book Page

Almost everyone nowadays has a coloring book, so color a page and give it to them. Pick something that is very intricate and pick a color pallet that is full of their favorite colors and shades of those colors if possible.

9. Knit or Crotchet

For you knitters and crocheters, make them something. Blankets are always a hit, or simply knit them a heart or if you can a small animal. I have a friend who does these kinds of gifts and they are really cool.

10. Food

Make them their favorite food and/or dessert. Who doesn't love food, especially their favorite food? Obviously some people have expensive taste, but most people have multiple favorite foods. So just pick the cheapest thing they will eat. Or do your research. Sometimes there are recipes on the internet that are cheap.

11. Write an Article

Write them an article. You could write an article all about them. It can be just a whole lot of why they are awesome or the journey of your friendship, etc. Maybe have it put in the school newspaper or other platforms.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
