When I took a trip to New York City this fall with the Honors College at my school, one of the Broadway shows I saw was the revival of Falsettos, a musical starring Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, Stephanie J. Block, Brandon Uranowitz, Anthony Rosenthal, Betsy Wolfe, and Tracie Thoms. Lincoln Center Theater describes Falsettos as a musical that "revolves around the life of a
charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, lover,
about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the lesbians next
door. It’s a hilarious and achingly poignant look at the infinite
possibilities that make up a modern family… and a beautiful reminder
that love can tell a million stories." While the musical is heart-breaking, it also has many comedic moments. Here are eleven of my favorite "funny" lyrics from the sung-thru musical.
1. "'Is it fun to cry over nothing?' 'It is!'" I'm Breaking Down.
2. What is this, wash and wear?" The Thrill of First Love.
3. "I'm too smart for my own good, and I'm too good for my sorry little life." Everyone Tells Jason to See a Psychiatrist.
4. "No one is saying you're a sick neurotic!" Everyone Tells Jason to See a Psychiatrist.
5. "Don't be disgusting; be yourself!" Please Come to Our House/Jason's Therapy.
6. "It's not a funeral; what's so upsetting?" Everyone Hates His Parents
7. "There's not a guy, there's not a horse, or zebra, there's not a giant man who could love you the same as I!" A Marriage Proposal/A Tight-Knit Family (Reprise).
8. "It's not a wrestling match; why are they sweating?" Everyone Hates His Parents.
9. "What have I done that they've ruined my bar mitzvah?" Everyone Hates His Parents.
10. "Everyone hates his parents!" Everyone Hates His Parents.
11. "Screw the nerves; I'll be eating hors d'oeuvres." You Gotta Die Sometime.
