11 Things To Thank My Freshman Roommate For

Very few times in our lives, we come across certain people that will be important to us forever. One of those times happened when I met you. I remember when it was all awkward, forced conversation. 'What's your major?' or 'Where are you from?' From there the questions became 'Can I borrow a pair of your boxers?' and 'Can you just shut the hell up?!' First semester was hard at first living with a stranger, but somewhere along the road, we had an A-ha! moment where we realized that being roommates was one of the best decision of our freshman year. And as I write this now, I realized there are several instances when a thank you was due.

Here's 11 reasons why I need to thank you for being my roommate:

1. Thank you for not being weird.

I have had heard some horror stories of other people's weird roommates, and I'm glad that I didn't have to deal with sleeping with one eye open, or worry about my things.

2. Thanks for driving me everywhere.

I didn't have my car on campus, and you have saved me countless times from walking in the rain and snow.

3. Thanks for listening and dealing with my pointless drama.

I bet that half the time either you didn't care. But I apologize for all the times I've gotten up in your face...Or sub-tweeted you.

4. Thanks for being my study buddy.

Because if I didn't have you, I probably would have failed out of school.

5. Thank you for waking me up for class when my alarm didn't.

I would have been late so many times.

6. Thanks for getting me food when I'm sick.. or too lazy to get up.

I know it's annoying, but hey someone's gotta do it.

7. Thanks for cleaning my mess.

I mean, I cleaned up your messes, so I suppose we are even.

8. Thanks for making sure I made it home.

Or at least checking to see why I'm not back, or taking me back even if I didn't want to.

9. Thank you for having a show that you watched with me and only me.

The Real World!!! (We are watching as I type this).

10. Thank you for not punching me in the face (even if I deserve it.)

I know that maybe I need a good love tap, but thanks for not breaking my face when I come in at 3 a.m. extremely loud.

11. Thanks for being my best friend, and helping me get through my freshman year of college.

I don't know what I would have done without you. I couldn't imagine not having all the laughs, fights, cries, or 3 a.m. talks that we had. Thanks for picking me up when I fall, and encouraging me. I hope we stay friends for a very long time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
