12 Foods URI Students Can't Live Without

Oh the memories...

Think back to freshman year, the first time you ever discovered that ordering a buffalo chicken pizza at two in the morning was an entirely achievable dream. From two-for-one calzone deals, to the horrendously nicknamed chicken nuggets served at Butterfield, URI students never go hungry. There are certain foods and restaurants that your average Rhody would definitely count as a staple part of his/her diet at some point or another, and here they are:

1. Albie's

At some point you've definitely fallen victim to trying one of Albie's ridiculous sandwich creations, named "PHAT sandwiches." The restaurant ambitiously stuffs their sandwiches with all of your guiltiest pleasures. I'm talking mozz sticks, french fries, tater tots and onion rings, all tucked between two pieces of bread. Although your scale may have been disappointed, your taste buds definitely weren't.

2. Kabuki

Because who doesn't love sushi? Your wallet, that's who. But you don't care because it's just so good and hey, you just studied for five hours, you deserve it!

3. "Butt Nugs"

I've always cringed at the unofficial name given to the infamous chicken nuggets served at Butterfield dining hall, but Rhody students go crazy for them. "Lets go get some butt nugs" is not an uncommon phrase to hear from your fellow students when living on campus.

4. Mozz sticks.

The mozzerella sticks at Butterfield are also a dining hall fave, even though they don't have a quirky nickname.

5. International Pocket

This place has got your hookup for some of the most delicious gyros, grape leaves, and falafel around. They've got a ton of rockin' salads and sandwiches. Plus, they always offer to give out samples, and who doesn't love samples?!

6. Iggy's

This place screams Rhode Island, and URI students are huge supporters. Iggy's offers all of your fried seafood dreams, plus some super tasty burgers, and of course, the infamous fluffy, delicious dough boys.

7. Hope Dining Hall weekend brunch.

As a freshman, this place was the ultimate cure for a rough Friday night. Something about their greasy home fries just seemed to work wonders. Even as juniors, my housemate and I would find ourselves laying in bed at 11am on a Saturday, longing for a guest swipe into the dining hall.

8. Brickley's

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! URI students scream for a more specific type of ice cream though, and that would be the delectable homemade ice cream served at Brickey's.

9. Smoothies

The smoothies served in the basement of the Union and the Rhody market are definitely a favorite among URI goers. They probably aren't actually very healthy, but they're definitely delicious.

10. Crazy Burger

URI students go crazy for Crazy Burger, and with good reason! This unique and extremely creative restaurant was even featured on diners, drive-ins and dives.

11. T's.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it's also the most delicious meal of the day when you go to T's. The wait is always crazy, but definitely always worth it once you're finally stuffing those chocolate chip pancakes into your mouth.

12. I-Zone

Of all the popular foods consumed at URI, the calzones provided at I-zone are quite possibly the most widely reveled. They're simple, delicious, fairly cheap, and served until 3 in the morning. And although they are open for all normal hours of the day as well, the most popular time of calzone consumption seems to be in the wee hours of the night. Oh, and they also sell pints of Ben and Jerry's.

With all this food around, it's probably good that URI is built on a giant hill. Stay hungry my fellow Rhodies!

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
