Keep Calm-O-Matic

With finals week fast approaching, it is easy to feel overwhelmed with projects, exams, papers, and the other deadlines steadily approaching. If you're like me, you are starting to feel the pressure of the culmination of the semester. While it is important to do well on all of the final aspects of the semester, it is also important to remember to take care of yourself during this stressful time. Here are a few tips to help reduce stress during finals week.

1. Time management!

Before we head into finals week, make sure you take the time to double check the scheduled time for your exams. Jot these times down in your calendar, or utilize that nifty app on your phone! Keeping track of your exam times can help you figure out time to study.

2. Exercise

Exercise reduces stress, so it can be beneficial to put down the books and hit the treadmill.

3. Get enough sleep

If you're anything like me, you tend to procrastinate until the last possible moment. When deadlines are quickly approaching, it is tempting to pull an all nighter or two, but remember to get enough sleep before and during finals week so you can perform well on exams.

4. Play with some puppies!

See if your school brings in therapy dogs during finals week, and play with some puppies!

5. Talk it out

We all know finals are stressful, so don't be afraid to reach out to the people around you. This is a great time to reach out to your RA/MA, Residence Hall Director, or even the Counseling Center. These people are here to help you, and they are there to listen.

6. PRIORITIZE!

At the beginning of the week, make note of what you need to accomplish. As you complete exams and other tasks throughout the week, cross it out on your list. This helps you prioritize, and you'll see your accomplishments!

7. Eat Smart

When you're stressing over finals, it's easy to forgot about making healthy eating choices. Make sure you're providing yourself with proper nourishment. Trying eating a bowl of fruit, instead of grabbing a bag of chips.

8. Group study

We're all in this together, right? Try getting a study group together with people from your classes. It can help to bounce your questions off of your fellow classmates, and you can keep each other motivated.

9. Take a break

It's great to power through and accomplish a bunch tasks, but make sure you also take time to relax. A 15-20 minute break can help you end up being more productive.

10. Reduce distractions

When you're ready to get down to business, put your phone on do not disturb or silence it. Reducing distractions will help you be more productive in the long run.

11. Reward yourself

Finals week can be rough. Don't forget to reward yourself after you successfully complete your exams and projects. It's nice to have something to look forward too after finals.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
