Over the past 25 years Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" has enchanted audiences of all ages. The film was the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and with the live action version of the beloved film coming out on March 17 of this year, the excitement is once again filling the atmosphere and calling for a tale as old as time. However, this beloved classic holds the hearts of many English majors in colleges all across the world - including myself. Therefore, without further ado, I invite you to relax, pull up a chair as I proudly present the 11 essential things English majors learn from Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
1. Never judge a book by its cover.
If Beauty and Beast can teach a person anything it is this lesson right here; The entire film is about learning to love someone for who they are on the inside rather than for their looks. This goes for books as well. Don't judge a novel solely on what the cover looks like instead open the book and dig a little deeper before making a final judgement about the written work.
2. INFJs and INFPs are awesome.
Creative people are the best kind of people and the best part is that authors such as Shakespeare, Lewis, Tolkien and Rowling share this personality type, as do most artists and authors. SO fear not English Majors of the world you're in good company.
3. Reading is cool.
Belle is like the poster child for reading, English majors need I say more...
4. DO NOT marry a person who does not appreciate Literature...
Books are essential to life as an English major there's a large part of why we chose our degree. Therefore, if someone can not at least admire your love of books I say do not take them as a life partner. In addition, please don't marry a jerk like Gaston who only reads picture books and who is overall disrespectful because YOU deserve better.
5. The Library
t
I don't think I need to explain myself. You all know what I am talking about. Thank you Beauty and the Beast for being the source of all English major problems we all love you.
6. Something is There
As every literature class as ever taught us there is a deeper meaning behind what lies on the surface level of the every text, SOMETHING IS ALWAYS THERE!
7. Symbolism
The rose in the movie symbolizes time passing and love blooming within this beloved classic and likewise the mirror functions as the beast's window to the outside world as well as a reminder to allow what is on the inside to be reflected on the outside. When studying English everything has a double meaning .
8. The Look...
All book lovers know about the look. It is the moment of pure love and affection that comes across one's face having read something of pure beauty. In case you are still a little lost please refer to the above picture and Belle will demonstrate.
9. Sometimes the most beautiful story is one as old as time.
Old books and old stories are simply a work of art that never truly go out of style.
10. Love your English professors.
Let's be honest English professors rock big time, and really good ones are hard to come by. These are the amazing individuals who get up every morning and share their love of knowledge, the written word and an undying admiration for a bunch of living and dead people - who happen to write some life changing work - with you because they themselves love it as much as you do. Although let's be honest and admit that most of authors and poets we English majors talk about in class and in reality love are in fact dead.
11. It is totally acceptable to read one book over and over again because it's your favorite.
Belle has spoken...
