11 EDM Songs That Teach Valuable Life Lessons
Laurence Brown

Everyone has heard influential songs that shaped their life. Something we don't often experience is a song that can potentially change your life. Any art form can greatly influence a person's personality and morals. Being that it is still new to the world and constantly changing, EDM is something that a large majority of the world still hasn't truly experienced. Every genre has those great "feel good" songs that anyone who listens to said genre will sing their heart out to. Although they are not all as widely known, here are 11 songs you may not have heard that have the potential to change your life.

1. Above & Beyond - "Thing Called Love"

Love is something special. Everyone knows what it is, but not everyone shares it 100 percent of the time.

2. Armin Van Buuren - "Alone" Ft. Lauren Evans

This song is another reminder of how we as humans should interact with each other. We don't always care for others as much as we say.

3. Swedish House Mafia - "Don't You Worry Child" Ft. John Martin

This song did eventually make its way into the mainstream, but Swedish House Mafia doesn't get the love from the general public that they get from EDM lovers. This song is a great reminder (almost verbatim) that we need to stop worrying so much about our lives and know that there's a future for all of us somewhere.

4. HeadHunterz - "Live Your Life" Ft. Crystal Lake

On top of understanding that we don't always have to take control of every second of our lives, many times we also have to make decisions. If it won't hurt anyone, and it's not something you or others consider wrong, you should take chances and have fun in life.

5. Zedd - "Done With Love"

Often when we are hurt by others, we shut out the world. The simple lesson in this song is that on any level, there will always be someone that cares about you who will feel sad when you do.

6. Kaskade - "Summer Nights" Ft. The Brocks

This one has potential to make a select few of you tear up. For anyone who had a friend/ significant other who was the only person that you spent any time with; they were the only person you made memories with and perhaps now all you have are those memories.

7. DeadMau5 - "Strobe"

I know what you're thinking; "There's no lyrics. How is this supposed to make me feel any different?" This song has something special about it. I have no idea how it works, or why it does, but this song (if you really just listen) will almost put you in a different state of mind. Sometimes I listen to this just to find what I'm really thinking; almost like a cheat code for meditating.

***Didn't work for you? Try it like this: Listen to this song with no interruptions in either a dimly lit room, or with your eyes closed. Or both. Preferably either with a nice sounding stereo, or headphones. Just sit, and let the music make you think. Don't let anything get in the way of the music. Facebook will still be there when you're done.

8. Porter Robinson - "Lionhearted" Ft. Urban Cone (Arty Remix)

The lyrics are the same in the original mix, but I personally like this remix better.

I'm not sure what the context is supposed to be behind the lyrics, but I see it as someone battling with some sort of internal struggle caused by others and overcoming it. We all need some reassurance that we can do what we want if we put our minds to it. An underdog story always seems to do the trick.

9. Calvin Harris - "Feel So Close"

This is another one that found its way into the mainstream for a little while. Some people see it as some sort of a profession of love for another person or group. While it's in a way not incorrect, it's actually a thank you to said person or group. Every now and then we need a wake up call to appreciate those around us, and this track does the trick.

10. Dillon Francis - "When We Were Young"

Another track about looking to the past. However, this one is about making something happen so that you re-live those memories. As college students, we can very easily lose track of our busy schedules and forget that sometimes we need to do something fun. And I don't mean that we never have fun; it's just sometimes we need to really get away from it all to realize how much we do.

11. Borgeous - "They Don't Know Us"

This is one of many songs that describe how EDM lovers have felt about being judged. The thing with music being something you hear is that you can build an entire culture around it. The life changing lesson from this song is that sometimes you can be too quick to judge someone based off of a stereotype because of the way they look.

EDM and Rave culture can get a bad reputation because there are people that make some not so great decisions. But, that comes with any culture. In particular, ravers are stereotyped as immature people that dress funny and do drugs to enjoy the music they're listening to. That's not entirely true. It's not that we dress funny; we dress how we want because we know the others around us will accept us as humans no matter what. As for the drug use; that's an unfortunate reality. However, a majority of all ravers and festival goers go for the lights and music; not to get high or trip out.

The overall point being don't judge people without understanding who they are or what they do. Below is a list of videos that give a little insight of how ravers feel and give insight to rave culture so you may have a little more understanding of it.

Icona Pop - All Night

Henrix - Acid Rave Sex

Caked Up - Rave Police

Dada Life - Freaks Have More Fun

Have you ever judged someone for looking like a raver? Do you understand them now, after learning about the culture?

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
