Ah, middle school. There's nothing quite like recalling some of the most awkward years of your life. The early 2000s was a strange enough time, let alone being a young person trying to figure out who you want to be. Let's take a trip down memory road so you can remember these 11 mostly embarrassing trends and fads you loved as an early 2000s middle schooler.
1. Tech Deck finger skateboards
Playing with these at school was pretty much a guaranteed way to annoy your teacher (and probably get them taken away).
2. iPods/MP3 Players
How else were you supposed to show off to your friends/crush/the annoying kids on your bus that you were totally cool with your personally curated playlist with all the latest hits from Britney Spears, Usher, Shakira, and Nelly?
3. Neopets/Club Penguin
Nothing was cooler than logging in after school to dress up your virtual whatever, playing games, and chatting with other cool kids online.
4. Skateboarding shoes
I'm pretty sure there is an embarrassing amount of millennials who are guilty of wearing skateboard shoes for fashion (myself included).
5. Myspace
We all spent hours making the hard choices in life to decide how we were going to represent ourselves online. The right pictures, songs, and top friends made ALL of the difference.
6. Energy drinks
As soon as you were alone with your friends, out of sight of your parents, and had access to a gas station and a couple of bucks. You snuck an energy drink to prove how awesome you were disobeying your mom's rules.
7. RAZR/Sidekick cell phones
You either had either of these and were one of the coolest kids in school, or you begged your parents for one for years when your upgrade finally rolled around.
8. Polo shirts
Everybody LOVED polo shirts. Popped collars, wearing multiple polos at once, and owning a polo in pretty much every color was pretty normal. It was truly a versatile shirt.
9. EVERYTHING customized with your name
You could always tell when people recently went on a vacation or a fair because they inevitably ended up with an airbrushed hat or shirt that adorned their name and some beachy/cool symbol. Personalized jewelry and backpack embroidery were also very common.
10. Trucker Hats
We had the likes of Paris Hilton and Ashton Kutcher to thank for our obsessions. Most of us never had the actual Von Dutch hats because our parents would never spend $40+ on a hat for a middle schooler.
11. Instant Messenger
Back in the days of a limited number of texts a month, IM was a great way to talk to your friends without burning through your allotted texts. Plus you spent an eternity choosing your screen name and away message to be the perfect amount of cool and mysterious
