11 Differences Between Home Life And Dorm Life

The things we take for granted while we're still at home.

11 Differences Between Home Life And Dorm Life

We all know that there are big differences between living at home and living in a dorm. Here are some of the main things you'll run into while you're living in your home away from home.

1.The $5 Mistake

Convincing your parents to buy you that cute shirt that only costs $5 can seem like nothing when you’re in your pre-college phase. But once the moths start flying out of your wallet in college, $5 is a treasure every student wants the map to.

2. Shared Space

We all knew that we were going to have a college roommate. But did the movies ever show three or four roommates? Not to mention that everyone on the same floor shares the same bathroom. Yeah, give that some thought.

3. Mess = Stress

To go along with the shared space, there's really no room for any sort of mess. One day of untidiness can land you on the next episode of Hoarders.

4. Staying Away From People

Unlike high school, if you aren't particularly fond of someone, steering clear of your foe may become a challenge... and an obstacle course.

5. Relaxing is a Thing of the Past

Relaxing? Does that even exist in the college world? Even if you are caught up with all of your assignments, why aren't you working ahead? Keep working!

6. Marching Band Rehearsals Take Place in Your Room

If you got stuck with an extremely quiet roommate, maybe you're the one directing the marching band. Whoever you are though, there has and always will be a point in the week where it seems like everyone is in your room at once.

7. Laundry Doesn't Fold Itself

Remember how you always used to wonder how all of your laundry magically got folded and neatly put away in all your drawers? Yeah, that was your mom. Now that she's not here, you've really realized what a mountain that laundry pile can become.

8. Home-Cooked Meals

After a semester of stale bread, cold soup, and broccoli every day, you'll never turn your nose up at your mother's meatloaf again!

9. You Fear When Your Neighbor is Sick

If your buddy next door is sick with the flu, keep your distance! If you roommate has it, you can only wait for the inevitable.

10. Off-Campus Trips

Walmart, Target, Starbucks or any other store or restaurant can be an adventure if it means getting away from the campus!

11. Christmas and Summer Never Come Fast Enough

If you're like me, you already have a countdown on when you can return home and see everyone and everything that you miss about your life at home.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
