11 Covers/Mash Ups That Were Better Than The Originals

We love the originals, but sometimes the covers are better.

We all know the original songs by heart once we have jammed out to them on the radio, app or put them on repeat until we know everything about that song. We are jamming to that song when it comes on the radio, our songs on shuffle, or even in the mall when you are with your friends.

Then one day you are scrolling through Facebook or on YouTube and you hear this song. You are confused for a minute until you realize that you know the song. It's not the original singer, but you like this version better! This does not mean you like the artist any less than before, but you may want to go back to that version more than the original! Here are some covers and/or mash-ups that I like way better than the original song or album!

(These are not done in any type of order. I just did them this way because they popped into my head!)

11. "Iris" -Goo Goo Dolls (Cover by Sleeping with Sirens)

The Goo Goo Dolls version is not horrible, but when I hear the version done by Sleeping with Sirens, I feel like I can relate to it more. Yes, the lyrics are the same, but the story seems to change when it goes from really loud drums and guitar to a beautiful piano.

10. "Too Good" -- Drake ft. Rihanna (Cover by Conor Maynard)

For this song, I never liked the original that Drake did. I'm not sure if it was because of the beat or just him singing it. When I bumped into this version, though, I fell in love! It's like a story between a couple and it just hit me right at home.

9. "I Hate You, I Love You"--G'nash ft Olivia O'brien (Cover by Conor Maynard ft Samantha Harvey)

I still jam out to the original, but again ,once you add the male voice to it, something changes in the story. Her voice is just gorgeous, so I can listen to her sing all day long!

8. "Just a Dream"--Nelly (Cover by Sam Tsui & Christina Grimmie RIP)

This song already brings tears to my eyes listening to it again. Christina was taken too soon and her talent stole my heart with this cover in 2010.

7. "Blank Space/Style"--Taylor Swift (Cover by Louisa Wendorff)

This beautiful twist of both songs with an acoustic atmosphere made me listen to it for hours. It sounds like a love story that will never end and no one can tell them what is wrong. Every relationship deserves to feel that way--they will never go out of style.

6. "Elastic Heart" -- Sia (Cover by The New Low)

Sometimes Sia song's just never sit right with me, and my friends love showing me new covers of songs. This was also a great one to add to the list because the words and the beat just completed the story.

5. "Smooth Criminal"--Michael Jackson (Cover by Glee)

I love this cover! "Smooth Criminal" has always been a great song, but adding the female vocals made my heart soar! This world does not belong to men, and this one shows that women can be smooth criminals and compete on the same level as them!

4. "Talk Dirty" -- Jason Derulo (Cover by Cody Carson)

I am going to be completely honest--the nerdy part was my favorite part of this whole video! Yes, also because he is cute and very sly with these vocals that I just needed to share!

3. "Umbrella" -- Rhianna (Cover by All Time Low)

R&B is great, but this punk version of this song made it perfect! I like jamming out to this one better than slow jamming to the other one. It just doesn't feel the same.

2. "Where Are Ü Now" -- Justin Bieber (Cover by Pentatonix)

I can't say I am a Bieber fan, but when I heard him sing this song, I kind of liked it. Of course, Pentatonix did it so much better, because this is song as so much more emotions when its this way! The a cappella version wins my heart and actually makes me cry because it's just so beautiful! Also because they are so skillful and I am jealous!

1. "Earned It" -- The Weekend (Cover by Megan Davies and Cameron Bedell)

Just listen to that guitar in the beginning. You will know after that because it just brings you in like a magical spell. This one is also a duet and it just brings the story together!

Moral? I really love songs that have the full package: telling the full and right story! I know there are a million great covers, but these are on my list and will never leave my list!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
