The South is known for many things. It is known for sweet tea, SEC football, breathtaking sunsets and expressions and metaphors only certain people understand. What y'all have to understand is that it isn't a right to be Southern, it's a privilege.
1. "Bless your Heart!"
No, this isn't a literal blessing. It's a nice way to call someone stupid, but when you have a twang it doesn't hurt as bad.
2. "(Too) big for your britches"
Your mama probably told you this when you acted like you knew more than she did about anything.
3. "Catawampus/Caddywonked"
This literally means sideways.
4. "Cain't never could!"
You never will if you don't try.
5. "Fixin' To"
My high school english teacher would get on us so bad about using this phrase, she would always say "Nothing is broke! So you aren't 'fixin' anything." This means about to do something.
6. "Reckon"
To suppose or believe that something is true.
7. "Barking up the wrong tree"
Basically, you're wasting your time.
8. "Buggy"
It's not a shopping cart y'all, its a buggy.
9. "Stick it where the sun don't shine!"
A very, sweet way of telling you to go screw yourself.
10. "He thinks the sun comes up just to see him crow."
This means you are arrogant and self-absorbed.
11. "Fly off the handle"
This means you are super pissed and things are about to go down.
Growing up in the South and then leaving the South for college, helped me to realize just how many people don't say "y'all," drink sweet tea or have fun sayings like we do. But I guess Brad Paisley was right when he said, "I can't see this world unless I go, outside my Southern comfort zone."
