11 Beginner Photography Projects

Photography is an amazing medium for many people, but it can be difficult to get started. These 11 ideas are a good way to get started.

1. 365 Project

Take one picture every day for a year and post a small description about the picture. It can be anything you want; a dog, a selfie, friends, sunsets, anything.

2. Weekly Project

For those who don’t have have the time, or easily forget, can do the Weekly project. Instead of taking one picture every day for a year, you take one picture every week for a year. Same deal as the 365 Project, it can by anything and it must include a small description.

3. Object Project

Choose a particular object, any that you want, and center a project around it. It could last a week, maybe a couple of hours as a photoshoot, whatever you want. It has to be about one particular object.

4. Selfie Project

I know, it sounds like an overdone and overworked project. Everybody takes selfies these days and most of the time it’s for superficial reasons. But what if you can make yours different? Maybe center a project around ugly selfies, or selfies from a certain angle? It all depends on you.

5. Light Project

Lighting is can be a photographer’s best friend or worst enemy. The way to properly figure out your preferred lighting is to make mistakes. What better way to make mistakes than to make a project out of it?

6. Theme Project

Make it whatever theme you want it to be and photograph it. You feel a certain way about weather? Well go about it. You are a strong feminist maybe? How can you convey that as a theme? Make it happen.

7. Reenactment Project

This project will require you to dig deep into your family archives. That’s right. Those embarrassing family photos are coming out. Find the photos that make you laugh and make them happen again. Maybe you’ll have to even dig through old Facebook and Myspace photos to find that one gem.

8. Portrait Project

This is a simple and clean project. Find your subjects and shoot them portrait style. You could switch it up and have your subjects change positions, facial expressions, whatever. They are different types of portraits as well; candid, traditional, environmental, glamour, etc.

9. A-Z Project

This project, you must do a photo for every letter in the alphabet. The catch is that the photos can’t include the actual letter. Get creative!

10. Black and White Project

Film photography is always a great place to start. Good old manual photos are wonderful to do because they train your eye. Plus, the process of making the photos can be very therapeutic.

11. Think about it!

You could always just make one up yourself. Photography is about expressing your POV. Do what you want and do it how you want it.

You don’t need a super fancy camera to be a photography. Just have an eye for your craft and you will make it happen!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
