Last week, I was binge watching the Harry Potter movies before I headed off to college (probably not my smartest move, because I was still distraught after watching "Deathly Hallows Part II" the next day when I was moving into my dorm room). I got to Half Blood Prince when — I'm sure this doesn't count as a spoiler anymore because of how long the movie came out, but still — Snape reveals he's the half-blood prince. And to this day, I still feel like the reveal was so anticlimactic. It got me thinking though about other anticlimactic reveals in both television and movies.
There's no real order to all of these, it's just what came to mind first.
1. The Force Awakens
First, I never actually saw the movie. *Gasp,* I know. From what I've heard though, Kylo Ren's reveal from his mask shows no real reason for one, unlike Darth Vader, he had no deformities or scars that would lead to him needing to wear one. I don't know if it's explained why he wears a mask in the movie, but that's the opinion I've been told, so... don't shoot the messenger.
2. Sherlock
This one is for all my fellow Sherlockians. Back in season two, when Sherlock jumps from the hospital building to save John and all his friends from Moriarty, remember that? Obviously, who could forget? That part wasn't anticlimactic, though. In the next season, when Sherlock never reveals how he did it, was. All we got were the crazy theories from Anderson and his group really. I was so looking forward to learning his secret!
3. Doctor Who
Are we counting plot hole related stuff in this? Well, now we are. While we're on the topic of British TV, let's talk about River Song. I love River and season six is my favorite season, even with the huge plot holes. Her reveal as Amy and Rory's daughter though? Not only did it cause huge holes to try and make it a surprise, it wasn't very surprising for me. I guessed in the second episode of the season, the young girl in Florida was their daughter (before the photo of Amy is showed.) And I can't remember when I put two and two together about the child being River, but I know I guessed it before Let's Kill Hitler when Melody is revealed as River.
4. Spider Man 2
This is just my opinion, but when Peter's mask is pulled off and it's revealed Spider Man is just a regular guy to everyone else, it felt very boring.
5. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arch
I'm a HUGE Indy fan, I have always been. But, I think we all know what scene I'm about to talk about. Remember the swordsman swinging that large sword around showing off his moves and Indy just shoots him? Yup, sure it was humorous in my opinion and I'm sure in others but definitely not what was expected and sort of a let down that there wasn't a real fight.
6. Hunger Games, Mockingjay
Probably, the most anticlimactic death in the book and movie was President Snow. It's been a while since I read the book but I do remember movie wise, that Katniss doesn't shoot Snow in his execution and instead goes for Coin before a mob goes and kills Snow.
7. Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest
I don't think this movie really was the best, it's my own opinion obviously, but what didn't help was the fact of how quick Jack's fight with the Kraken went. I'm sure we all wanted a drawn out and long fight, and not what we got.
8. The Shining
This is a GREAT horror movie, we all know Stephen King is amazing with horror, but the most famous scene of the hacking down the door with "Here's Johnny," was really such a small part in the movie when it's expected to be much bigger. Or it's just me, who knows.
9. Broadchurch
So, I haven't watched any of Broadchurch, but again I was told of this (even though I kind of wish I wasn't, because I still really want to watch the show). Apparently, the killer is exactly who everyone thinks did it, which to me is probably the worst way to run a show, I mean where's the surprise? Sure, you don't want to pull a Moffatt with Doctor Who and leave tons of plot holes just to try and surprise your viewers...but still.
10. Doctor Who (again)
I love this show so much, but sometimes there's just such anticlimactic moments where you're so disappointed in the show. Another one, again in season six, is when the doctor survives his own death by, get ready for this world of confusion, hiding inside a robotic version of himself...yup Moffatt went there.
11. Guardians of the Galaxy
This is a great and funny movie. But the ending, no matter how funny it is was kind of anticlimactic when Starlord asks Ronan for a dance-off after he's done giving his typical villain-y speech superhero villains usually have. Like with Indiana Jones, it shows not all anticlimactic moments have to be bad.
