1. Do not take everything you own to college.

You will not wear everything in your closet, even if you think you will.

2. Learn to do your own laundry.

Learn how to do laundry before you go to college, because you don't want to be that one who doesn't know what to do and has to ask how the washer works. It's one thing to ask questions, and another to completely not know how to do laundry. Be mindful when doing laundry and take your clothes out of the washer or dryer when it is done. There is a courtesy of about 10-15 minute max and if you are not there by that time, then good luck to ya.

3. Become best friends with your professors and administrators.

Trust me, you will not regret it.

4. As much as you may hate the cafeteria food, don't go broke going out to eat all the time.

You can always concoct something tasty in the caf, whether it is at the salad bar, at the sandwich station, or in the buffet line.

5. Do not wear your lanyard around.

I repeat do NOT wear your lanyard. You will stick out like a sore thumb, and upperclassmen will be able to pick you out of a crowd.

6. Naps will be your best friend.

Five minutes of resting your eyes in between classes as you wait for your teacher to start class, or well, during class, will be your life saver. Long naps are like treasure, savor them.

7. Learn when it is okay to go out and have a good time, and when you need to stay in and catch up on Netflix and sleep.

You're in college and you only live once am I right? It is totally okay to go out, but make sure you take care of yourself and know when it is a good time to stay in for the night instead. You need to take care of your mental and physical health, and sometimes you just need a night to lay in bed with the carton of ice cream and binge watch Netflix.

8. Try new things.

Step out of your comfort zone. Try new foods, meet new people, go on random trips, join a club, anything!

9. Be spontaneous.

Learn to be spontaneous. If you get a random craving in the middle of the night, or want to randomly go explore campus, grab a friend and go do it. These will be some of your best memories.

10. You will change.

This is one of the most important things you could know about your first year of college. You are in a new place, with new friends, new experiences and you will learn a lot about who you are. It is okay to make mistakes, but learn from them and let this sculpt you and your future self. College really is what you make it.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
