Even at the age of 106-year-old, Virginia McLaurin, had a big dream that she was determined to accomplish. Her dream? It was to meet our first colored president.
McLaurin was born in 1909 in South Carolina and moved to Washington in 1941. Her life dream was to meet the Obama family and this desire sparked a social campaign called HelpVirginia. The campaign included a YouTube channel, Facebook page as well as a White House petition. On Dec. 18, 2014, Virginia posted a YouTube video with a message to the president. In the video she states that she never thought she would “live to see a colored president.”
More than a year after her petition Virginia finally got her dream. She was welcomed into the White House and got to meet the President of the United States and the first lady. Her excitement is captivating as she dances around with the president.
The White house tweeted the magical moment between the Obamas and Ms.Virginia McLaurin.
We are in a puzzling time, cultures are being praised at times then shunned. Individuals have become ashamed of where they come from because of this idea that it isn’t “American.” America has been home to many different heritages so no one is the definition of that. They do not want to be ridiculed or sometimes even associated with it.Her love for her heritage is inspiring as she has seen the growth of black lives up close and personal. Her energetic personality is also contagious as the first lady says she wants to be “like her when she grows up.” She is 106-years-old but has the energy of any 20-year-old individual. That passion is not only amazing but motivational. Sometimes we take life very lightly and even our culture, but Ms. McLaurin has taught me a very valuable lesson. Love your history.
I am not just talking about black or colored people, I am also referring to individuals of White decent. Caucasian individuals have such a rich history as well and it is not all associated with negative ideals. We have placed so much importance on defending our own race that we have started to shun others for being different but isn’t that what we are against. In the end, negative people will have negative things to say whether you are black, white, brown or even red.
Be proud of your heritage and be as positive as Ms.Virginia McLaurin.
