High school is what you make it. You get out whatever you put in. Here are 100 tips from graduated high school students (including myself) to ensure survival and make high school a little easier for you:
1. Do your required credits that you need to graduate first so your senior year isn't crammed with a bunch of classes.
2. Go to as many school events as possible.
3. Be involved, it helps you meet so many new people.
4. Study for the SAT, a good score really can help.
5. Don’t stress over high school drama (none of it actually matters).
6. Join student Gov. to have a voice.
7. Start working hard freshman year. You're not going to regret it come application time.
8. Stock up on snacks (the lunches aren't that great).
9. Homework grades can make or break you.
10. Try everything once. Even if it means going to a club meeting only once just to get yourself out there and broaden your perspective. You might end up finding something you really enjoy.
11. You don't leave high school with all of the same people you came in with and that's okay.
12. Make as many friends and meet as many people as you can.
13. Don't wait last minute to do your assignments, they'll end up building up and make you more stressed than you would've been if you did it when you were supposed to.
14. Make friends with people from other grades. They could help you and vice-versa.
15. Start saving money early!! It's never too early to not be poor.
16. Get a job even if it's only one day a week, it'll teach you balance, responsibility, and you'll always have some money.
17. It’s okay to kick toxic people out of your life.
18. Ask for help if you don't understand something.
19. It's okay to not be good at everything.
20. Be involved but don't overwork yourself.
21. Go out and have fun on the weekends.
22. High school is easy (compared to the rest of your life) so appreciate it.
23. Be honest, don't hide or build up your feelings, it's unhealthy.
24. No one actually cares about what you're doing so do what you feel.
25. Enjoy it while it lasts.
26. Don't stress over small things, chances are it's not actually a big deal and doesn't actually matter.
27. In a week, no one is going to remember that you dropped your plate in the middle of the cafeteria, that you tripped up the stairs, or that your leggings were see-through, so stop stressing about it!
28. Don't get involved in petty drama.
29. You're going to look back at yourself every year and laugh no matter what so just have fun.
30. Don't obsess over social media.
31. People act way more tough/cool/chill online than they actually are.
32. By the end of high school there is no such thing as popularity or social status! You're not better than anyone else, so be friends and talk to everyone or you'll regret it once you graduate!
33. Become close to your grade before the last week of senior year.
34. Get close to your teachers, they'll enjoy helping you and it'll help with recommendation letters when you start applying for college.
35. Keep track of your assignments, by the end of high school your teachers don't care if you get a 0 and they won't remind you to pass something in.
36. Teachers are almost always up to give you a little extra credit by the end of the semester so don't be afraid to ask.
37. You'll probably get your heart broken but it will eventually get better.
38. Don't be afraid to do something because you're afraid you'll look dumb. Have fun!!
39. If you bring in food you'll automatically become friends with everyone in your class (my slutty brownies serve as proof of this).
40. Don't be douche bags to substitute teachers.
41. There's literally a club or sport for everyone so join one! And they look good to colleges!
42. If you slack off freshman and sophomore year it'll be harder to redeem yourself junior and senior year so try every single year.
43. HAVE SCHOOL SPIRIT! It's not lame to support your own school!
44. By the end of the year sweatshirts and leggings become your best friend.
45. Don't! stop! in! the! middle! of! the! hallway!
46. Accept the fact that when you're a freshman people just aren't going to like you and they won't have any reason to other than the fact that you're a freshman.
47. People who are good listeners are also good gossipers so watch who you talk to.
48. Going along with #46, the quiet ones in the back of the class are always listening.
49. If you DO copy off of someone's homework at least switch up the wording a little bit so it's not obvious.
50. There aren't massive parties like in the movies and there aren't that many parties in general so don't get butt hurt if you don't get invited to tons. There'll be more in college ;)
51. It really does fly by so enjoy it.
53. Coffee/ anything with caffeine will become your best friend.
54. Something shitty will happen and you'll think it's the end of the world but there's still so much you haven't experienced in life and things will get better so just hang in there.
55. If you weren't a nap person before you will become one.
56. It's okay to not have plans every weekend! Find a hobby.
57. Be comfortable and able to do things on your own and be independent.
58. Spend some time by yourself and relax.
59. Learn how to cook at least one thing really well (Pasta is a good one).
60. Don't stress over one bad quiz grade, it happens.
61. Underclassmen: sit in the back of the student section. Don't fight it, don't question it, just do it.
62. Seniors: Lead the student section, have school spirit, make the underclassmen look up to you!
63. Don't befriend a senior JUST to go to prom, it's scummy and neither of you will have fun.
64. There are times and places for drinking and smoking, school is not one of them.
65. Don't make-out in the middle of the hallway right before class, I can assure you you'll see each other again in an hour.
66. All of your money will be spent on food.
67. Your mental health comes first.
68. Don't post pictures on social media of you drinking, especially athletes, you can get caught, suspended, and kicked off the team.
69. If your teacher makes a mistake don't be afraid to correct them, they might reward you and usually it's with candy!
70. Shouldn't even have to say this but… there is also another time and place for sex, and school is not one of them either.
71. Do class activities to bring your grade closer together.
72. Elect a good student president and help raise money so you don't have prom in the gym.
73. Looking confident makes you more approachable!!
74. It's okay if you and Jenny are wearing the same outfit, no one cares.
75. If there's extra credit, do it! If you don't do well on it it won't harm your grade but it can help immensely if you do it well.
76. Learn to do things on your own, you won't always have someone with you.
77. Take any senior seminar or real life classes so you can learn about taxes, bank accounts, loans, etc. before you leave high school and need to know those things.
78. Don't wait last minute senior year to hand things in, you can't graduate if you owe something and if you lose them then you and your wallet are screwed.
79. If you're a freshman and a senior is “talking” to you chances are they're just trying to hookup.
80. Explore all the classes you can because in high school you get them for free. Take the odd extracurriculars, it could help you find your major!
81. You are going to change throughout high school but it will be for the better. Take time to yourself to realize those changes.
82. Teachers aren't always right. Enter class with a questioning mind, ask hard hitting questions, and spark discussions.
83. Take notes during class, it helps later on.
84. Be respectful of upperclassmen, they've been where you are and know what they're doing.
85. Developing upperclassmen friendships not only improves knowledge but also social life.
86. Be assertive. Part of adulthood is to fight for what you believe in.
87. Take challenging classes but don't go overboard!
88. You are more than a number or a rank.
89. You are not going to get along with every teacher and their style of teaching might not be the best for your style of learning.
90. Flashcards rock and pretty much everything is on quizlet!
91. Find a kickass study playlist, it really does help!
92. Don't take the easy way out, colleges notice what classes are easy to get an A in and which ones aren't.
93. Learn to balance school and social life.
94. There are so many helpful resources around school, use them!
95. Have fun senior year but don't completely slack off, even though you got into college your grades still do matter.
96. Color coding and highlighting helps! Stay organized!
97. Use binders and folders for each class to make it easier to find papers.
98. You will meet people who you will be friends with forever and lose people who you thought you'd be friends with forever.
99. It's okay to say no to something you don't want to do.
100. Don't forget to have fun and enjoy high school while it lasts! It's the last years of your life where you're a free kid that's fully dependent on your parents so take advantage of it!
