When young women started suctioning glass cups to their mouths to mimic Kylie Jenner’s lip look, I considered that maybe these young women just have body image issues; after all, plastic surgery is quite popular. When young women created the “power brows” trend, I thought that maybe they had been looking at too many makeup companies’ Instagram accounts. But when I first encountered this “100 coats of...” makeup trend, I was absolutely disgusted. This may be the worst makeup trend, yet.
A lot of girls love makeup, and I can’t tell you how many makeup tutorials I have watched on YouTube because it’s an embarrassing number. Makeup tutorials are guilty pleasure of sorts for a lot of young women, but this “100 coats of... " makeup trend has gone entirely too far.
At first I was disgusted. After I gave the concept a bit more thought, I was angry.
Wasting money.
Even the drugstore brands of mascara, foundation, lipstick, and whatever else are expensive. $5 for a drugstore lipstick doesn’t seem like much, but when you stop and think about how many lipsticks these young women use for this “100 coats” challenge, it starts to add up. And for what benefit? Young women put on 100 coats of foundation, only to wipe it off seconds after completing the “challenge.” I understand that this is supposed to be a fun Internet trend, but carelessly wasting perfectly good makeup in exchange for views is sickening. Setting dollar bills on fire would be more effective.
A Disturbing Trend
Beauty and art are both completely subjective. I love going to museums, and I have a profound appreciation for what people can come up with artistically. Putting 100 coats of nail polish on and then peeling off a “mountain” from your pinky finger is not only disgusting, but it is a bit disturbing.
Skin and Hair Damage
A few spritzes of hairspray to tame flyaways, a couple of layers of liquid foundation to smooth out skin complexion and a couple of slicks of mascara to add volume and dimension to your eyes is normal and probably not that harmful to your body. Spraying 100 rounds of hairspray will probably make your hair dry, brittle, and more susceptible to damage. You will need a serious conditioner after doing that to yourself. If you have ever worn mascara, you know that you lose several eyelashes when taking it off, and that's normal. Can you imagine how damaging it would be to your eyelashes to have 100 coats on them? That's not to mention the serious pore clogging that will be going on. You'll probably get a really serious sty.
Maybe I am missing the point. This is clearly another ploy to gain attention on social media, but why is this a thing that exists? What is so fascinating about someone making themselves look weird? I thought the whole point of makeup was to enhance your natural beauty. For whatever twisted, psychological reason people find these videos appealing to watch or to do on themselves, it needs to stop.
