At the beginning of the summer, I set up notifications to my
computer, so it would tell me the word of the day (every day). Then I would try to use that word, in my
language. It was a lot harder than I thought, a lot harder. But it taught me
the power of language and the words we speak. It has been said that people
speak close to 20,000 words per day. these words are powerful, why not use
words that challenge others to understand, to listen. Challenge others to speak
more eloquently. Here are five words of the day that I found, intriguing, refreshing and all around fun.
1. Kvell /k(ə)vel/ (verb): To be extraordinarily proud.
2. Nadir /ˈnādər,ˈnādir/ (noun): The lowest point of something.
3. Foozle /ˈfo͞ozəl/ (noun): A clumsy or botched attempt at something.
4. Parry /ˈperē/ (verb): Ward off (a weapon or attack), especially with a countermove.
5. Callow /ˈkalō/ (adjective): Inexperienced and immature.
6. Redamancy (noun): The act of loving the one who loves you; a love returned in full.
7. Numinous /ˈn(y)o͞omənəs/ (adjective): Describing an experience that makes you fearful yet fasciated, awed yet attracted—the powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed and inspired.
8. Oneirataxia (noun): The disability to distinguish between fantasy and reality.
