Lately, it seems feminism is misunderstood and misconstrued. When I was growing up, my mother planted strong feminist values in my mind. I've always been a feminist, so seeing others who ostracize feminism is difficult for me. Feminism is defined as "the belief men and women should have equal rights and opportunities."
Feminists do not hate men, and they certainly do not believe women should have more rights than men. We simply believe we should have equal rights and opportunities. Several public figures have stepped forward and voiced their opinions on the subject to become my role models.
1. Amy Poehler
Parks and Recreation is a hugely active feminist, too.
2. Gloria Steinem
I had such a hard time picking which quote to use here.
3. Madeleine Albright
4. Zooey Deschanel
The thing I love so much about Zooey Deschanel is she owns her femininity. She lets the world know feminism is about being a successful woman and embracing who you really are.
5. Hillary Clinton
When I think feminism, I think Hillary Clinton.
6. Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou is one of my favorite authors. Almost all of her poems have a feminist message. Her poem "Phenomenal Woman" is one of the most moving pieces I've ever read.
7. Nicki Minaj
I love Nicki's encouragement to have a sense of yourself.
8. Beyonce
Can you say "Lemonade"? Queen B is a major feminist. Rutgers University even had a class on Beyonce's feminism. She sets a great example for feminists.
9. Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling was a lead writer on "The Office" and a prominent member in Hollywood. She's such an important example for feminists.
10. Taylor Swift
If you follow me, you know I love Taylor Swift more than life itself. I think her feminism is important because it was gradual. She learned about it and developed it gradually. After being slut shamed by the media for years, she learned about feminism and now advocates for it.
All these women have had a significant impact on my life, and I hope they can have one on yours.
