10 Ways To Make Move-In Day Easier

Residence Hall move-in day is best classified as complete chaos. I have moved in to three different residence halls and have had completely different experiences each time. These ten things will make your move-in experience a less stressful start to the school year!

  1. Pack everything in stackable totes. 18 gallon plastic bins are a great way to make this process easier. Placing the totes on the cart is simple and easy
  2. Bring your own cart. Chances are, there are only so many carts at the residence halls. By bringing your own, you will have less of a wait to get one.
  3. Arrive Early. Typically, move-in is scorching hot. Come on, it's August. To avoid the heat, arrive early, and do the heavy lifting before the heat of the day.
  4. Move in days early. Typically, the earlier you move in, the fewer other people are also moving in. Less people is less chaos.
  5. Don’t bring everything you will need for the entire year. That winter coat you won't wear until after Thanksgiving can wait until after the break!
  6. If possible, know who your roommate is ahead of time. If you plan the move together, there will be fewer things in the room. You do not need two refrigerators and microwaves.
  7. Don’t bring a trailer (if possible.) But if you are moving in from a far distance, the trailer might be necessary.
  8. Rent the big items. Renting micro-fridges makes for more space in the vehicle and an easier move.
  9. Don’t bring items that are at the front desk. Pots, pans, vacuums, mops, etc. are all items that can be rented at the front desk. Avoid bringing items like these.
  10. HAVE FUN! College is the best four years of your life. Don’t be afraid to meet and introduce yourself to everyone on your floor and in your hall.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

The Belchers hold the key to a better life.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
