Sprinkle some green living into your home this year. Whether you want to be savvy with your resources, do good for the environment, or just want to bring more of the outside indoors, this list has got you covered. Check out these 10 ways you can "green" your apartment—both literally and figuratively.
1. Make Plants Your Pets
One of the easiest ways to green your apartment is to think literally. Whether you get a Cactus, a Venus Fly Trap, or a Floating Moss Ball, adding a piece of nature to your home is fulfilling. Not only does it give you a warm fuzzy feeling to be a plant mom, but certain houseplants (like Peace Lilies and Spider Plants) also provide numerous health benefits.2.Unplug Appliances
When you leave your phone charger plugged into the socket, even when your phone isn't attached, it's still drawing energy. So, to save energy in a way that's both good for your electric bill and good for the planet, get in the habit of unplugging your laptop charger and coffeemakers. If you want to save energy with less effort, invest in a power strip so at the flick of a switch your plug-in devices will stop drawing power.
3. Recycle
When you're living in an apartment, sometimes this is easier said than done. Unfortunately, there are a lot of apartment complexes that don't offer recycling; if this is the case, get creative! Find your local recycling drop-off and schedule a drop off for your recycling every week. Or, if you live near a college campus, utilize the recycling centers it provides.
4. Stock Your Fridge With Locally Grown Produce
After working and volunteering on an organic farm, I'm a big advocate for buying local. Make a fun trip out of it and head to the Farmers' Market with your friends. You can also check to see if you live near a community garden and volunteer in exchange for fresh produce. Not only is it good for the environment to buy local, but it's good for you—and, it's honestly delicious.5. Start an Indoor Garden
Grow your own tomatoes, potatoes, and herbs inside your home and reap the benefits! Plant herbs like basil, parsley, and oregano and use them right in your kitchen. Flashback to grade school science projects and cut a potato from the store in half and stick it in some dirt. With a little more effort, grow your own tomatoes with a pot, a stake, and a sunny windowsill.
6. Reuse Glass Jars
Reuse glass jars for vases, drinking cups, or storage containers. It's cheap, it's fun, and, because hipster bars, coffee shops, and restaurants do it, it'll make your apartment look suave.
7. Make Canned Goods Yourself
Use your newly re-purposed glass jars to make your own infused honey, salsa, pickles, or kimchi. Recently, I got a mason jar of honey, stuck a cinnamon stick in it for a week, and bam—just like that, I had cinnamon infused honey to put on my oatmeal every morning. Plus, if you've ever had homemade salsa from a jar, you are immediately invited to every house-warming party.
8. Save Plastic Bags
While it's always better to not be using plastic bags in the first place, we all end up with plastic bags at one point or another. When you do get plastic bags, save them and re-purpose. I've seen some pretty crazy plastic bag crafts out there—including making plastic bunny-demons for Easter—but you can also save them to use as trash bags for bathroom waste baskets.
9. DIY Cleaners
Save money and make your own non-toxic cleaning supplies. Look up recipes online and invest in essential oils. You can make all-purpose cleaners with vinegar, water, and citrus essential oil; you can also make home-made air-fresheners with vodka, water, and the essential oil of your choice.
10. Decorate with Nature
Recently, I wrote an article explaining how to press flowers; read it, press some flowers, and then let the crafting begin. There are so many different ways to make art out of dried flowers—my favorite being glass-framed dried flowers, and a DIY 3-D wallpaper with dried flowers. But, you can also hang flowers upside down in your room with twine to add flair to living space.
