10 Ways To De-Stress
Sunlife

The world these days seems so hectic and fast paced. It seems almost like you can't get a break or some time to yourself. This can cause major stress on the mind and that is never good for anyone. I've to come up with a few ways to help de-stress your mind and to show that there are still ways to slow down in this fast paced world.

1. Art.

Get a little artistic, it doesn't matter if you can only draw stick figures. Drawing isn't the only way that you can get your art on. You can paint, use clay, make a collage, etc. The whole point of this is to help you take your mind off of everything.

2. Yoga.

According to Merriam-Webster.com, yoga is a system of exercises for mental and physical health. This is a definition that I can really get behind, because it's true. Yoga is not only relaxing, but a work out as well. Working out releases endorphins, which is a chemical used to fight stress.

3. Read.

You know what I'm talking about. The book that you've always been planning to read, but just have never gotten around to it. What better time than the present?

4. Listen to music.

I know when I'm stressed, I like to listen to music that will help to lift my mood. You know, songs that are your jam. It could be anything, any song that makes you want to get up and dance.

5. Cook.

This is another way to kind of refocus your attention, try to not think about the stressful parts of your life and take some time to create something. You know what makes it even better? The fact that you can eat your creation afterward!

6. Writing.

This is something that I like to do personally. I know that not all people like to write, I just like it because I like to write short stories and what not. I guess it just goes back to putting your energy into something else-something that doesn't stress you out.

7. Nap.

It's crazy to think that when you were a little kid, you hated taking naps. It's only as you get older that you grow to appreciate them. I would compare taking a nap to recharging your body. I read once that the optimal time to take a nap would be around 90 minutes. Napping for this long is known to boost memory and creativity.

8, Watch a movie or TV show.

One thing that I like to do whenever I'm feeling stressed out, is watch something on Netflix. I could finish an episode of a show that I had been watching or watch Disney movie. Anything that really makes me laugh and lightens my mood.

9. Silence.

Have you ever heard the term silence is golden? Well I feel like when you need to clear your mind, it's best to not have any noise to distract you. Try to distance yourself from the world and focus on how you really feel.

10. Talk to someone.

This isn't just limited to family or friends, it could be anyone that you feel comfortable with. Talk about your day. Talk about what's stressing you out in particular. You could even rant if you feel like it. You'll feel a lot better afterwards.

Stress is something that everyone goes through and these aren't the only ways that you can handle it. Different ways work for different people. These are just some ideas that I have come up with and things that I have actually tried. You'll find the ways that work for you and hopefully make your life a little less stressful.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
