10 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day
Earth Talk

Earth day is a holiday we don't really celebrate and sometimes even forget it exists. This April 22nd, let's really come together and make an impact on the environment, even if only for a day. If you need some ideas on how below are the top 10 ways.

1. Skip the car

There are so many other alternatives to get around other than driving. We have become so accustomed to it that we are not getting out there and trying new things, especially things that help the environment. Remember this Earth day, you may want to take your bike out, scooter, skateboard, roller blade, or even take the bus. Walking is also a good way to get around and you also get fit doing it. It's a win-win.

2. Plant your food

If you are vegetarian or vegan, you may already be doing this. If not, you do not have to be vegetarian to grow your own vegetable garden. Your vegetable garden will not be full of pesticides and GMO. This is a fun and easy way to save money by not going to the grocery store as much. You can also use this as an excuse to have some spare time with your kids. Either way, you should get something growing this summer, even if it's only one plant.

3. Going solar

You may think that this is an expensive alternative but I can assure it is affordable. When people think of solar energy they automatically think about solar panels on and around their houses. Yes, solar panels are a way to save energy and preserve the environment but, there are other ways. One of those ways is a pocket sized phone charger. How many times do you actually charge your phone, laptop, and tablet everyday? This can save you a lot of money in the long run.

4. Conserve water

There are plenty of ways you can conserve water. Some are not as bad as you think. For example, if you are brushing your teeth you can turn the water off until you need it. While you are shaving in the shower you might also consider shutting the water off until you are ready to rinse. All of this really does make a big difference.

5. Save electricity

You remember hearing mom and dad always telling us to turn the lights off? Well, they were just trying to save money. If you would like to do the same all you have to do is use less air conditioning and heat when needed, unplug appliances and electronics when they are not in use, and always use energy saving light bulbs.

6. Get out in nature

Now is the time to get out there and breathe in the fresh air. If you are into yoga, this would be a great alternative to practicing indoors. If you practice alone or even with a class from your local gym, you may suggest that they move the classes outdoors. You may even benefit more from yoga this way, as nature is blissfully relaxing. Best party is, you don't even need to waste electricity.

7. Volunteer

Volunteering your time to organizations that want to make the world a better place is a great way to give back this Earth day. You may find yourself planting a tree, or, if you do not want to go to an organization, helping a neighbor is just as good. You can help your neighbor by planting them a garden or educating them about ways to preserve the environment.

8. Switching to e-bills

Ever get a bill in the email and wish you could just get it online? This is a great way to do that. Most of your bills will offer you an e-bill option where your bill will be sent to your email. By doing this you are saving a million trees a year. This is something you should consider to benefit the environment in the long run.

9. Recycle

This is the oldest one in the book and I am sure many of you do this already. Those of you that do, great job and keep on going, those who do not, you might want to start this April. There are countless items that can be recycled and it is very easy to do. If you are out and about and you get a Starbucks but have finished you cup, throw it into the recycling bin before you leave. It cannot get any easier.

10. Donate

If you are in the position to donate money to a charity that's goal is to help preserve the environment then this may be an option for you. Some people find themselves too busy to do some of things on this list so if you got it and want to help, there are a ton of organizations out there that will gladly accept your help. By doing so you will be something in return next tax season.

I am sure there are more ways to celebrate Earth day this year. Below are some organizations that you may find helpful.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
