As college students we often have no choice but to sit for extended periods of time. Whether we're sitting in class or studying for an upcoming exam, its easy to find ourselves caught in a cycle of sedentary behaviors. This may not seem like that big deal but periods of two or more hours of uninterrupted sedentary behavior has been linked to long term health consequences. According to a study conducted by Dutch scientist Julianne van der Bergit, siting for long periods of time can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The American Journal of Epidemiology also found that sedentary behavior is directly linked to a higher risk of Cardiovascular disease - the leading cause of death in the United States. So as harmless as it may seem sitting for long periods of time, we must become more active on a daily basis or inactivity can become detrimentals to our long term health. The American diabetes association found that breaking up sedentary time throughout the day can combat the health risks associated with inactive behavior. So what can you do to be more active? Below I have listed 10 ways to be more active right here on campus.
