10 Ways To Make Yourself A Happier Person

1. Make yourself your number one priority.

This is something many of us forget to do on a daily basis. We tend to be so busy trying our best to please others we forget to take care of ourselves. Making yourself your number one priority is crucial to finding happiness from within. Once you can depend on only yourself to create your own happiness, you will never have a hard time finding your way out of the dark days.

2. Place yourself in a positive environment.

Who you choose to surround yourself with can have a huge impact on your mood as well as overall happiness. Whether it’s just spending time with friends, or by yourself, being in an environment that promotes good vibes and decisions is never the wrong choice. It will overall improve your mood, and you’ll likely live a happier lifestyle.

3. Eliminate negative vibes.

Anything that doesn't make you a better version of yourself, needs to go. Anything that is inhibiting your growth as a person is likely making you unhappy as well. It can be difficult to let go of toxic people or even habits, but in the long run, it will be so worth it and you'll notice a huge change.

4. Journal.

Keep a daily journal. Bottling up feelings and thoughts can have a huge impact on your mood. Writing down what happened in your day can help you start fresh in the morning. Every day is a new day.

5. Travel often.

Traveling is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in new cultures and environments. Spending time in a new place can help clear your mind, as well as create an escape. Who doesn't love going to the beach or visiting the mountains, hey?

6. Exercise daily.

Whether it’s a full body workout or just a walk getting outside or to the gym is always a great idea. It is a sure fire way to clear your mind, plus the endorphins aren't too bad either.

7. Keep yourself busy.

Time spent unwisely can lead to lots of overthinking. I found that sleeping was a way that helped me stop overthinking; however, it can often put you in a worse mood. Keeping yourself busy with things such as daily errands, cleaning, or even reading are crucial to keeping your mind happy.

8. Help out.

Helping less fortunate or even just family members is a huge mood booster. Even just helping out at a local church or warming center, can create new friendships and relationships in your community. You’d be surprised how much you can have in common with others once you get to know them. I have been involved with many church organizations as well as disaster relief agencies and it is an incredible experience that truly makes a difference in other people's lives.

9. Spend time with family

It's true what they say about your parents growing old as we grow up. After being away at school for a year, I realized how much I missed my family. Since being back home I try to spend as much time with them as I can. You'd be surprised how much better you feel after a talk with your mom (I may be biased).

10. Don't be too hard on yourself.

In the end, you are doing the best you can so don't beat yourself up. Let go of the little things, even though it's easier said than done. Enjoy life, because it's much too bright to spend it in the dark.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
