1O Ways You Know You Were A Strong-Willed Child

Sorry Mom....

1O Ways You Know You Were A Strong-Willed Child
Leila Moore

To all the heathens out there and to their poor parents, I assure you it gets better!

1. Spankings meant absolutely nothing to you.

Well, you see a strong-willed child isn't quite strong enough of a term for how willful I can and could be. When I was younger and would have a temper tantrum, I would hurl things from the back seat of the car into the front. It was my specialty, and my mom used to keep a paint stick in her car so she could attempt to contain me but unfortunately, it never made much difference. I would just get out of reach and if the car stopped, take off running. Imagine my poor mom trying to drive while Leila induced bombs of various objects were flying by her head. Sorry, Mom!

2. Rules were more like suggestions.

3. The word impossible did not resonate.

4. Everything you put effort into was your idea.

5. If you wanted something, you found a way.

I became pretty resourceful at a young age. If I wanted something I would find a way to get it.

6. Respect had to be earned.

7. You don't fit in a "box."

8. A freight train couldn't stop you.

When I was in kindergarten, I played soccer and was goalie during our game when this kid ran up and tried to score. I caught the ball and set it down (because I apparently didn't understand we were still playing), and the kid kicked the ball right in. I proceeded to scream bloody murder, stalked off the field and refused to play. Needless to say that was the end of soccer.

9. You'll exhaust all resources, all energy and do absolutely anything to get what you want.

I specifically remember when I was in 8th grade, I asked my mom if I could get my cartilage pierced, and she said "No, why don't we until I can research it more?" Well, that wasn't a good enough an answer for me apparently, so I looked it up on YouTube and pierced it myself.

Thank Your Mom!

As you've probably gathered I wasn't the easiest child but my mom stuck by me despite my ridiculousness. After all being a strong-willed child isn't always the worst thing. Those qualities can be negative but also really positive. I'm still difficult, but I have learned to use my stubbornness to succeed, and we all know I will if I set my mind to it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
