I personally have been through a few break ups. I know that they hurt like hell and can take a little bit of time to get over. Whether you're going through the end of a relationship or the end of a friendship, it can be hard to find the coping mechanisms that work best for you. Here to help, I have compiled my favorite techniques to help the pain.
Listen to music.
This sounds stupid but I promise it helps. The first few days, listen to a few sad songs and let yourself cry it out. It will be cathartic. However, when you feel ready, start transitioning to empowering and upbeat songs that will help you to feel better.
Exercise
When break ups result in you being more angry than sad, take out your frustration at the gym! The endorphins released will help to lift your mood a little bit.
Have a night in with friends.
What are friends for if you can't rely on them in difficult times? My friends always help my pain, no matter the situation so having a movie night or making dinner with them can't hurt, right?
Go through your things.
I found it extremely beneficial to go through my closet and all my belongings and throw away what I didn't use. It felt refreshing to be able to purge the things that were no longer necessary. I also took them to a consignment store and used the money I got from that to treat myself so win-win.
Treat Yourself
Enough said.
Make a change
Or don't! Whatever you want! I like to get a little hair cut or a new piercing to put some pep back in my step.
Find a new hobby
I know after a break up, I feel like my life has been intertwined with the significant other and I need to run in new circles. Take a chance and try a new club or activity that you've always wanted to. If you don't like it, you don't have to go back!
Don't hold a grudge for too long
Holding a grudge is always my natural instinct. However, I always feel infinitely better whenever I let of whatever anger I'm holding onto. It's not beneficial to you or your mental health to do so.
Eat
Food is the way to the heart, so why not try to get in touch with yours with some snacks.
Recognize! Your! Worth!
Self love is the best love.
