10 Ways Fashion School Surprised Me

Having no guys in my classes was not the surprise.

I’m finishing my eighth week at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and each day has given me the chance to learn in and outside of the classroom. FIT is not a traditional college by any means—most students are certain with what they want to pursue and 80% of them are girls. Having this in mind, here are the top ten most shocking things that I learned in my first few weeks at fashion school.

1. The social scene is hidden

I am only a little envious of my other friends who chose to attend a more traditional college. Here, there are no parties or sports games to attend on campus; instead you have the city to explore in your free time.

2. Your wallet will hurt

I’ve talked to many students and most have already spent +$1,500 the first few months of college from dancing, dining, and shopping. Living in New York City comes with a hefty price.

3. … But there are plenty of free things to do

Many companies and programs sponsor free events in NYC to generate more awareness for their brands. Searching "free things to do in NYC" has become one of my favorite pastimes.

4. Subway apps will be your best friend

Moving from a small town created an unforeseen barrier when I arrived in the city. There were so many things I wanted to do but I had no idea how to get there confidently. Apps like CityMapper have become my best friend these first months as I try to avoid looking like a helpless tourist.

5. Networking, networking, and networking

As a freshman, I thought very innocently that I would be able to focus on my studies and on developing friendships during my first few semesters. Quickly, I learned that if I wanted to be successful in the fashion industry, there was no time to waste. As early as next semester, I have to start applying for internships. It’s all about who you know and who will help you get to the next level in your career.

6. Some are not looking for success

Truth be told, there are quite a few students who are here just because they love “shopping”. Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes, it’s hard to explain why you are so motivated in and out of class.

7. Not everyone dresses exceptionally nice

However, I haven’t seen anyone in sweatpants either...

8. Security is tight

The first thing I noticed when moving in was the amount of security guards present. Even after the fact, there were security guards everywhere (especially after the Chelsea bombing)-- on the streets, at every entrance, and walking through the hallways. FIT takes students’ safety very seriously.

9. Class sizes are small

No lecture halls here. That means you show up for class or risk being kicked out if you start accumulating absences. No exceptions!

10. NYC is your campus!

Being in the city is one of the greatest assets to this school. Each student has the opportunity to meet other kids from a variety of colleges, attend interesting events, or simply take long walks around Central Park. Every day, students are supplied with endless opportunities and plenty of memories to be made.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
