If there's one thing I've learned about Duke since being a student that I didn't know before, it's that the social scene is steeped in drinking culture. Don't get me wrong, Shooters makes for a great evening if you're into it! But, if you're not, you might find yourself at a loss for fun things to do on a Friday night. Here's a list of 10 non-alcoholic activities to try instead of hitting up that frat party.
1. Attend a Durham Bull's Game
Even if you're not a die-hard baseball fan, you're sure to enjoy a Bull's Game. Hotdogs, popcorn, a beautiful Durham sunset. What's not to love? Besides, it'll give you a great opportunity to meet some (real) Durhamites, and hopefully see the Durham Bull breathe smoke when the team gets a home run!
2. Go to a DPAC Show
Would you believe me if I told you that Durham is home to the number four ranked theater in the United States? Probably not, but it's true! The Durham Performing Arts Center is only a stone's throw from Duke's East Campus, and houses over 200 shows every year! This year, the DPAC will feature Fun Home, Rent, Chicago, and The King and I, just to name a few!
3. Host a Movie Night
What's better than a night of movies, pajamas, and friends? When the stress of the semester has gotten to you, you and your friends are sure to find some relief in a stay-in movie night. If you're like me and my friends, you'll have already established a Movie Night Jar from which to select your feature presentation. Or just an organized spreadsheet. We have both.
4. Watch a Free Movie in the Bryan Center
Did you know that, in the BC, Duke shows free movies most Fridays and Saturdays? And they're good movies! If you're already out and about and are looking for a movie theater experience without movie theater prices, check out what's playing at the BC.
5. Uber to the Streets at Southpoint
Durham has one of the best malls ever. Well, one of the best malls I've ever been to at least. With plenty of places to shop, eat, and browse, Southpoint Mall is sure to provide an all-inclusive entertaining evening. And, it's only about 20 minutes from campus!
6. Get Crafty with your Roommates
If there's one thing I like to do, it's craft. And crafting for your dorm room with your roommates is the best way to bond! You can make door decs, wall hangings, coasters, fun photo collages, and anything else your heart desires! But, remember what your kindergarten teacher told you about scissors: they're sharp and not to be played with. I speak from previous experience.
7. Catch a Concert at Motorco Music Hall
Motorco is an awesome local venue here in Durham that sponsors a variety of shows, including live music, comedy, and films. And, a lot of their shows are free, which means they're perfect for the frugal college student.
8. Check out the Duke Coffeehouse
The Duke Coffeehouse is East Campus' hidden gem and my favorite place at Duke. The Coffeehouse's welcoming environment pulls you in, it's delicious coffee makes you linger, and the cool people you'll meet make you come back time and time again. In addition to having a full coffee bar, the Coffeehouse also serves as a venue for local musicians, playwrights, and drag queens. It's always a blast.
9. Join A Pinhook Dance Party
The Pinhook is yet another event space in Durham, and, among other things, they host dance parties! Gather up a group of friends and bring your best dance moves. If dancing isn't your thing, don't worry. The Pinhook also hosts concerts, karaoke, and open mic nights.
10. Just Take a Walk!
If you've exhausted all nine other points on this list, I recommend exploring the city for yourself! I guarantee you'll find something new and exciting each time you venture out. Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy your non-alcoholic Durham night!
