School is closer than we think, and the shadow of all of the work we will have to do is beginning to lurk around the corner. As hard as it may seem, this will all be worth it in the end, and we just have to keep pushing. Sometimes our stress can become overwhelming, and we forget to look for the future. So here are so healthy stress outlets to help you ace this year with a smile on your face.
1. Exercise.
Whether you like to run or do yoga, take thirty minutes every day to work out a sweat. Exercise is a good way to work out your frustrations and releases endorphins to boost your mood. Most schools offer a gym membership and workout classes, so take advantage of your facilities and use this as a study break.
2. Listen to music.
Everyone needs a good jam session every now and then. Blast your favorite tunes and sing at the top of your lungs. Try to listen to upbeat music, instead of slow ballads. Listen to music for the mood you want to be in, not the mood you are stuck in.
3. Write.
Sometimes we don't want to complain to our friends for fear of sounding whiny. And that is completely understandable, but if you still need to get it all out, grab a pen and some paper. Write down all of your frustrations and worries and then toss them in the trash. You'll feel better, and no one will every have to know about them.
4. Go outside.
Whether it's a nice sunny day, or snowing, fresh air is always good. Spend a little time outside, taking in all nature has to offer. Being cooped up in a small space can drive you crazy, so take some time for yourself, and go explore. Whether that means sitting under a tree in the quad, or going for a hike, just spend a little time with the world. It will help put everything into perspective.
5. Talk to friends.
For me, the best thing I can do is vent to my friends. I don't even need them to say anything, I just need to get it off my chest. Your friends are there to help you and listen, but just remember that you are there to do the same. If you're friends are kind enough to listen to all of your homework issues, be kind enough to listen to theirs as well. Who knows, maybe you guys can even work it out together.
6. Meditate.
We all need to take a few minutes to center ourselves sometimes, and meditation is a great way to do that. Focus on your breathing, and try to clam your thoughts. You'll be shocked at how much perspective you can get by just clearing your mind for a few minutes.
7. Pamper yourself.
We all need a little treat every now and then, so treat yourself to a massage, manicure, or even a new shirt. Giving yourself a little reward for all of your hard work helps to make it all seem worth it. Set goals and treat yourself when you achieve them. It doesn't have to be expensive, it can just be a bunch of girls with face masks, but you will feel so much better after you have taken a moment to spoil yourself.
8. Do something you love.
For me it's writing, but for you it could be drawing or knitting or rock climbing. Take a little time away from all of your stressors and get lost in something that you enjoy doing.you'll thank yourself for it later.
9. Laugh.
They say that laughter is the best medicine, and in most cases, they are right. (Whoever "they" are.) Watch a funny video, hang out with friends, or read some funny books, either way try to laugh everyday. It boosts your mood, and makes all of the stressful things, seem a little better.
10. Eat your favorite meal.
Sometimes we all just need some of mom's cooking. If you're like me, and don't have mom there to cook for you, try to find somewhere that serves your favorite meal. Take the time to enjoy it, and remember why it's your favorite.
School can be daunting, and stressful, but you will make it through. Just manage your stress, and if it all becomes too much, talk to your advisor about lightening your load. There is no shame in dropping classes, and taking a break. Good luck with this year, and remember to smile, laugh, and do something you love every single day.
