10 Ways To De-Stress!

If you’re in college right now or just going through a stressful period of time in your life, then this article is for you! This week has probably been one of the toughest for me yet this year. I had a midterm and a paper due on the same day, along with other assignments and track practice to keep up with! Not to mention the next two weeks for me aren’t looking so fun either… So I am creating a list of things that help me to de-stress in these difficult and very anxiety filled times!

1. Take a ten minute break.

Studies have actually been done that show taking a ten minute break every 40-90 minutes of work that you put in help keep you focused while studying or working! (Study Tips!)

2. Listen to some music.

I find that by listening to my favorite songs relaxes me and puts me in a better mood!

3. Go exercise!

Literally my biggest stress reliever is running! Afterwards I feel so much better not only physically, but mentally as well leaving me ready to tackle any homework assignment that comes my way.

4. Read a book.

There’s just something amazing about being able to get lost in another world that’s totally different from your own. It can help take your mind off of your current situation.

5. Sleep.

Whether it’s taking a short twenty minute nap, or calling it a night and heading to bed, I always feel that after I sleep for a while I am more energized and ready to work!

6. Spend time with family and friends!

I always feel more confident and relaxed after venting things to my family and friends. They always provide me with reassurance, advice, or empathy when I come to them with a stressful situation.

7. Pray.

This may seem strange to some, but prayer (or meditation if you’re not religious) can really help relieve stress. Just talking to God and giving Him all my fears and anxieties usually fills me with peace and gives me strength to keep on keeping on!

8. Find your quiet place.

Sometimes I just have to shut everything off and just be. It allows me to focus and see things with more clarity than before.

9. Spend time with a pet!

Literally, being in the presence of a dog makes me feel ten times happier…

10. Make a change of scenery.

Sometimes if I am stressed, I’ll just go outside, sit on my back porch, and enjoy nature!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
