Many, many English Lit classes know the beauty and heartbreak of Dead Poets Society. If you've had the pleasure of watching the classic drama starring Robin Williams, you've probably heard of the poet Walt Whitman, as many of his poems are quoted in the movie. Walt Whitman has a lot of great material for almost every occasion, and one of the things he does best is write about self-love and confidence.
Here are just 10 of the hundreds of things he has to say about being un-apologetically yourself.
1. "I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops!" -Leaves of Grass
Every once in a while, you've jut gotta yell... it might as well be a mighty, barbaric yawp!
2. "I sing the body electric." -Song of Myself
Many of us know this quote from the song taken from the movie Fame, but before it was there, it was in a poem by Walt Whitman. This quote celebrates the body and the gift of movement it gives us!
3. "I am as bad as the worst, but, thank God, I am as good as the best." -Leaves of Grass
We're not all great at everything, but we're all good at something!
4. "And your very flesh shall be a great poem." -Leaves of Grass
One of the best complements anyone could give anybody. You're a poem! How sweet is that?
5. "Seeing, hearing, feeling, are miracles, and each part and tag of me is a miracle." -Leaves of Grass
Whenever you're feeling down about yourself, just remember that Walt Whitman thinks you're a miracle.
6. "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes." -Song of Myself
Allow yourself to make mistakes. Allow yourself to change your opinion about things. You're allowed to change your mind.
7. "Let your soul stand cool and composed before a million universes." -Song of Myself
Next time you feel like you're going to fail, remember that Walt Whitman wants you to be successful enough to stand before a million universes (And wants you to be calm while doing so.)
8. "I exist as I am, and that is enough." -Song of Myself
Improving yourself is never a bad thing, but never let yourself forget that you are enough just as you are.
9. "I celebrate myself and sing myself!" -Song of Myself
Love yourself! Sing yourself! Praise your good works! Be proud of yourself!
10. "To have great poets, there must be great audiences, too."
No poet would have its purpose without readers. Allow yourself to be the reader sometime. You don't always have to be the poet.
