Apparently being a vegetarian is incomprehensible to some people. I am not a total vegetarian, I still eat chicken, turkey, and fish. I haven't eaten red meat in over 10 years. But these are some things I hear all too often.
1. "So like, what do you eat?"
Uhhhhh, what? Does everything you eat have meat in it? I didn't think so. There's plenty of food for vegetarians to eat.
2. "But what about protein?"
Meat is not the only source of protein, y'all.
3. "Can't you just eat around it?"
Do people who are allergic to certain foods just eat around it? No. Many people choose not to eat meat for religious reasons or dietary restrictions; we would still be consuming the meat in some way even by picking it out.
4. "So you can't have hamburgers?"
Yes, we can! There are so many meat substitutions for burgers! Black bean burgers or imitation meat burgers can be great alternatives!
5. "But bacon is soooo good!"
Again, there are options for bacon.
6. "Does it gross you out when people eat meat in front of you?"
I have never understood this question. What you eat is up to you. Who am I to judge what you're eating?
7. "OMG I could never give up meat."
Well. If your religion doesn't permit eating meat, or if causes you to have stomach discomfort (me!), then you bet you could do it. It's all about willpower. And then it just becomes part of your lifestyle.
8. "It must be hard to eat out."
Depending on the restaurant, it can be. But so many places have yummy vegetarian alternatives! I just had cauliflower tacos the other night! Most places are also pretty accommodating if you ask for no bacon (or whatever meat) on your dish.
9. "You must be so healthy!"
Girl, please.
10. "Don't you miss meat?"
Nope. It's been so long.
