10 Unmistakable Signs You're From Brooklyn

You can never have too much pride in being from the best borough in New York City. Here are 10 signs that you're definitely from Brooklyn.

1. You pronounce "water" differently.

Sure, it might not sound classier, but you'll always be proud of the way you say "water" and any other word with a Brooklyn accent.

2. You expect a different culture in every neighborhood you visit.

There's Brooklyn's own Chinatown in Sunset Park, halal food galore in Bay Ridge, and multitudes of hippie restaurants in Park Slope. There is truly no end to the amount of cultures in Brooklyn.

3. You're not always used to the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Brooklyn can be just as chaotic as Manhattan, but you know you're from Brooklyn when you're more inclined towards a calmer atmosphere. After all, the front stoops, numerous parks, and cozy streets are irresistible.

4. Cotton candy, churros, and Italian ices are no strangers to you.

Brooklyn is the best place for street food, whether it's from vendors in subway stations or vendors on actual streets. You'll never stop looking forward to the varieties of food you can get, whether it's ice cream, churros, cotton candy, or mangoes on sticks.

5. You love your neighbors.

Yes, they will blast their music sometimes, but your neighbors are great friends who you have genuine connections with. You share food, drinks, and sometimes, even pets!

6. Your jogs can be peaceful.

Rather than having to navigate through the crowded and dirty streets of the other boroughs, you can run through streets lined with actual trees, streets that aren't filled with shoppers, slow walkers, and tourists, and streets that are clean!

7. You admire the street art every day.

Brooklyn is thriving with artists, and some of them display their creativity on the streets and other public spaces. Nothing's better than having the chance to admire some beautiful art while on your way to school or work.

8. Coney Island can either be a getaway or a disaster for you.

There's great food, music, amusement park rides, and a beach at Coney Island, but you know you would never go on a hot Friday or Saturday afternoon. The amount of people there can be overwhelming, but you always know the best times to go.

9. You know the parks here are unbeatable.

There's Prospect Park, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Owl's Head Park, Narrow's Botanical Garden, and of course, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Central Park might be big, but its beauty can be absolutely surpassed by the parks in Brooklyn.

10. You never just say you're from New York City.

You have so much love for Brooklyn that you never forget to share that you're also from this magnificent borough!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
