Whether you’ve spent the last four years here, or you only just arrived, any student who goes to UWGB quickly learns that school here is unlike any other college. It’s a unique place with awesome staff, nice buildings, and professors who care about their student’s achievement. There are hundreds of things that make UWGB special, but here are just a few things everyone who goes here knows without a doubt to be true.
- Campus is basically a wildlife preserve
From the second you step foot on, or drive into campus, you’re surrounded by trees and grass and nature. It’s like they carved out just enough of a forest to fit the campus into, and left the rest. On any given day, you will probably see a massive amount of geese, turkey or even deer walking around campus, and you don’t even think twice about it.
2. You will argue that UWGB is, in fact, the most beautiful campus
Even the the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire has already been given this title, you would beg to differ. There’s walking trails, gardens, patios, huge sprawling land, our very own golf course and wonderful lakeshore views. You’re surrounded by green all the time (unless it’s winter ~shudder~) and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
3. The tunnels are perhaps the greatest invention ever
For those of us who have grown up in Wisconsin, we are used to this whole winter thing by now; however, it’s that much more exciting that we finally have a way to escape it now, with the tunnels that connect all the buildings at UWGB. The walk from your car or dorm is the only one you’ll have to face in the cold, because the rest of the time, you get to bask in glorious heating.
4. You’ve gotten lost in the tunnels
Alright, so the tunnels have their disadvantages too. The way campus is laid out outside is not at all how it feels when you’re walking around the tunnels. It’s hard to tell which direction you’re going in sometimes, and if you’re not paying attention, you might miss your turn (literally) and get completely lost.
5. You’re either a transfer student, or you know one
At UWGB a vast majority of students are from the area, or live very close to it. This means that a lot of students transfer here to be closer to home (like me). If you didn’t transfer yourself, chances are you probably know quite a few people who have.
6. You check the new coffee flavors daily
The cafe’s around campus have pretty great Door County Coffee, and there’s always a new and exciting flavor awaiting you when the old one has run out. My favorite by far was iced cinnamon bun, but you never know when that will change.
7. It’s a ghost town above ground
With almost everyone using the tunnels to get around to their classes, even though it’s usually faster to go outside, you might find yourself hardpressed to find anyone walking around outside. It’s sad that in a campus so filled with nature, most people choose to stay inside, but it does make for a peaceful walk when you choose to do it.
8. You probably haven’t been further than the sixth floor of the library
Whether it’s because you don’t want to commit to that level of silence, or it’s because the elevators only go up to the sixth floor, chances are you haven’t spent much time on the top levels of the library. However, you will be blessed with stunning views of campus if you do.
9. You cannot, I repeat, cannot go anywhere on game day if you live off campus
We are in the home of the Packers after all, and they make quite the traffic problem for anyone trying to get things done whenever there’s a home game. Whatever you do, make sure not to plan a group meeting, or last minute study session at school on these days, because you will be stuck in the game-day traffic.
Last but not least, if you go to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, you know how lucky you are to be at one of the best, most beautiful and fun colleges in the nation. It’s a shame not everyone could come and see how amazing life is here, but we should all be proud to be Pheonix.
