Yesterday might've been the first day of 2017, but it's definitely not too late to make a resolution. Here are a few of my personal suggestions. Some are serious, others . . . not so much.
1. Every time you face an annoying problem, write down an outlandish invention you’d create to fix it.
Bonus points if the device's name ends in "inator".
2. Wreck the timeline.
Get two notebooks. In one, keep track of every time you wish you could travel back in time and change something in your life. At the end of the year, get out the other and write down what the ramifications of changing the timeline would’ve been. This is a good way to see how even the worst circumstances can lead to better things sometimes.
3. Think of 2017 as a rough draft of your origin story.
Decide what you’d cut out and what you’d add in. Give your allies and enemies fun nicknames and powers. For example, think of a tough paper for a strict teacher as a battle of wits with your archenemy, Captain Corrector.
4. The average container of tea has 20 bags. There are 365 days in a year. Try 18 different flavors instead of buying the same one over and over.
5. Rearrange your home by the amount of commonplace objects you could use to injure an intruder.
Try to make sure there’s a fairly equal number of household weapons per room (although the kitchen will probably be the winner).
6. Make a list of things you did wrong in 2016. Do your best not to repeat them.
7. Write and send at least one real letter per month.
8. Keep a notebook of memorable quotes you hear in real life.
9. Plan out your dream road trip and make a playlist for it.
Then, find someone worth going on it with, get in a car, and drive.
10. Every time someone sets you up on a blind date (and vice versa), return the favor (if they’re single).
Whether or not you choose to follow any of these resolutions is up to you. I just hope that, regardless of what you have planned for this year, you learn to experience new things and people, roll with the unexpected, and find more joy in 2017 than you did in 2016. Happy New Year's, everybody.
