Being on summer vacation has got me channel surfing like crazy lately, and I am always disappointed by what I find on the daytime tv networks. What are these shows on Disney about talking dogs and child superheroes? Have they officially run out of ideas? Since remakes and revivals are becoming increasingly popular in the movie industry, here are 10 shows or movies I watched growing up that they need to bring back to daytime TV before I explode.
10. "Out of the Box"
Yes, I am fully aware that this is a show meant for elementary age students, but there is no denying that it taught you everything you needed to know about imagination and arts & crafts. I swear to this day that Vivian and Tony had magical powers, and when I was little I could not even begin to try to figure out how a bunch of cardboard boxes had that much space on the inside to build that insane clubhouse. The theme song and goodbye song were also total bangers.
9. The Zenon Movies
ZETUS LAPETUS why did we never get a spin off series of these movies? We all wanted to live in space when we were younger and Zenon gave us hope that we would actually get to in the near future. Why did we never get to see grown up Zenon? Was she too cool to let us know what happened after she had to save the space station a million times? And don’t even get me started on how much of a regulation hottie Proto Zoa was. Yes sir I would be honored to be your super nova girl.
8. "Saved by the Bell"
While everyone else was busy being obsessed with Friends, I was hanging out at The Max and falling in love with Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski. I am still obsessed with those two and hope that they’ll pull a Mila and Ashton and actually fall in love in real life so we can continue the storyline.
7. "The Proud Family"
From teaching you how to love your flaws to having the most relatable family drama ever, The Proud Family is easily the most underrated Disney show of all time. They made a movie based off of it which was a huge disappointment and didn't do the show justice one bit. They should right the wrong by bringing it back for the next generation of cartoon lovers.
6. "Bill Nye the Science Guy"
Everyone can agree that Bill Nye is probably the smartest man alive. As someone who isn’t even that interested in science, I was obsessed with science when he was teaching it to me. The best days at school were always spent sitting in front of the giant tv watching Bill Nye on VHS. Disney should do us all a favor and reboot the show (for the sake of the children, of course).
5. "6Teen"
Ok I cannot be the only person that watched this show. It had little 8 year-old me looking forward to turning 16 and being able to work at the mall and have all these crazy adventures. I also loved how everyone in their friend group was different so it gave me high hopes of there not being cliques in high school. Luckily you can still find most of these episodes on youtube for about the same quality that was shown on tv, but now I wanna know what happened to my favorite six people in college.
4. "Braceface"
I don't know if it was the fact that I looked like the main character or the pure enjoyment of the voice of Sharon Spitz (main character) being Cher from Clueless, but something about this show never annoyed me. Almost everyone has had to deal with the trauma of wearing braces at some of the most crucial moments of our young lives and Sharon was a perfect mirror to the initial humiliation I'm sure we all felt.
3. "Sabrina the Teenage Witch"
From 16 to 25 year old Sabrina, I felt like I actually grew up watching her. I saw her go from high school to college to a job to getting married and even though I was obviously much much younger than the female protagonist, her experiences were my experiences. Thank heavens this whole series (from when it was Sabrina: the Teenage Witch to just Sabrina) is on Hulu so I can binge watch it whenever I want. However, I would like to see what her and Harvey are up to now.
2. "Rocket Power"
Is there anything cooler than being able to surf? Especially when you're like 9 or 10 years old? I loved how this show encouraged kids being active and going outside doing all this crazy extreme sports stuff, and I will forever love how one of the main characters was this badass girl who could hang with the guys (and sometimes be even better). I think we all wanted to be best friends with these kids.
1. "As Told by Ginger"
Am I the only one that watched this religiously? I was the Ginger in a time when I was surrounded by nothing but Courtneys. This was helpful in that awkward stage of my life where I felt like I was too emotionally intact and mature for everyone except for my journal and this red headed cartoon just got me ya know?
Ah the nostalgia. Whether I was shredding the waves with the Rocket family or making arts & crafts in a cardboard box clubhouse, my childhood was filled with numerous shows that today's youngsters are being greatly deprived of.
